Daniel Goleman is the best selling author Emotional Intelligence. One time while visiting Google he gave a speech to the employees and one point came across as very important. Goleman said that while technological places might not explicitly value soft skills, such as empathy or other aspects of emotional intelligence, it is what implicitly makes people effective in whatever they do for a living. This is especially true for Google and other companies like it where the IQ of all the employees is very close. Daniel Goleman’s key aspects in his argument were the six differences in succeeding in technology companies, the differences in the brain, and managing emotions. He said these people think about how they can improve performance by making devices better, faster, quicker, and stronger. He reasons that their drive is because of high internal standards. The second difference is impact or influence. He states that this is being able to make persuasive arguments and hold your own in a debate. Another key in this aspect is being able to tailor your presentation to the audience. The presenter needs to be able to keep the attention of the audience when the daze off by changing their attention over to something else by telling a story. The third and fourth differences are closely related. They are both cognitive abilities rather than emotional intelligence like the first two. The third difference is conceptual thinking. Conceptual thinking is being able to pick up on data and patterns to make connections. These connections are then used to realize what needs to be done. The forth fourth difference is analysis. This is breaking down problems systematically, anticipating obstacles, and drawing logical conclusions. Finally, there are the final two differences which are both also emotional intelligence. The first is taking on challenges without being told. This also includes being persistent in tackling obstacles. Then the final is being self confident which is a very key aspect.
