My advertising campaign was for Chip Magnet salsa, an internet salsa with a creative name, but with limited advertising. After researching food items and salsa specifically, I realized that many advertisers chose distinctive colors and slogans to portray their spicy food. I chose this product because it used a play on words in the name. Further, I added the slogan, “all that and a bag of chips” to add a catchy slogan to the brand name. Adding puns and humor people will remember is one of the many strategies advertisers use to persuade consumers. While the title speaks for itself, bold flavors need bold marketing. Some of the most remembered commercials and ad campaigns use humor to interest viewers. An example of humor used in a commercial is still known today from Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef” advertisement. I used a play on words to add wit and humor into my advertisement. Phrases such as “hey big dipper” and “all that and a bag of chips” express humor which helps “consumers remember the ad and associate positive feelings with the product” (Analyzing Persuasive Techniques in Advertising). When consumers reflect back onto the advertisement or hear the phrases used, their brains will instinctively crave the spicy salsa as seen in the ad. My ad portrays that not only is the salsa hot, but it can make anybody more attractive, even a nerd. The focal point in my Chip Magnet ad is the nerd, depicted by his clothing, in the center holding the salsa. The person eating the salsa has transformed from being nerdish to attractive and “hot” just like the taste of the salsa. This is an example of simple solutions, because when eating this salsa, you will become attractive just like the person in the ad. This technique is also used in Victoria’s Secret advertisements because the viewers believe that if they wear the clothing, they will look like the models. To add to the technique, I added the phrase “hey big dipper, try our salsa because even nerds turn into chip magnets.” An alternative interpretation of the nerd eating the salsa might be that only socially awkward people eat the product. However, Chip Magnet in this case is a play on words to resemble chick magnet, a popular phrase. A chick magnet is a male who attracts women like a magnet attracts iron.
