One way that therapists help clients is by helping them form new figure-ground relationships in order for the individual to be aware of their self and their environment, and live in the present moment with awareness (Jones-Smith, 2012). In this stage, I was able to help Joshua realize that he needs both of his polarities are important to his total personality. After he finished discussing both of his polarities, he seemed more relaxed than before we began the therapy session. I let Joshua know that the session was over and thanked him for his time.
Furthermore, my goal is to let client fix their problems on their own through insight and guidance from the therapist. I envision a successful therapeutic process being when a client follows their goals and achieves positive outcomes in their lives. I seek to gain a therapeutic process with my clients by building rapport, trust, and helping them gain insight. When my clients are stuck and need motivation, I plan to remind them about their goals and the positive things that will come with change. If family is important to a client, informing the client about their family and their happiness may help motivate them to continue to
Useful to Know Instillation of hope is useful to know for several reasons number one is hope to help patients still in therapy to reach their goals. Faith to believe that the treatment is working well for the patient. Also, other members in the instillation of hope observe their fellow members that are improving. It is also useful to know that the instillation of hope encourages the therapist to believe in themselves when counseling a group. The corrective emotional experience to me is useful in group work because the therapist uses the concept of the here-and-now method.
A great point that Corey, Corey, and Callahan (2010) make is to seek personal therapy. Talking with colleagues or a therapist will keep counselors on their toes and allow them to work out any issues that may arise. This could also prevent counselors from getting into a bad situation. Another good point made in this book was counter transference. Therapists are going to have an opinion and some reactions are going to show through.
The Counseling Profession A counselor is defined as a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems. Professional counselors help to identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional or social interruptions. Counseling also improves communication, strengthens self-esteem, and promotes behavior change in relations to mental health. Counseling enables us to appreciate how we are in healthy relationships and safe environments due to some of the bad things others experience. Counseling helps clients understand and clarify their views on life and learn to reach their goals through making wise choices.
Introduction Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) emphasizes the importance of thoughts on producing behaviors. The fundamental principle of CBT is for counselors to assist clients in changing their negative thought patterns and recreate these into positive self-enhancing thoughts. The therapeutic relationship is grounded on collaboration between the counselor and the client. The counselor plays an active role but relies on the client to make changes. Together, the counselor and client will develop realistic goals that are achievable within an appropriate amount of time (Corey, 2017).
Both individual and family therapy are forms of treatment which provide individuals with guidance in working through conflicts, building a stronger sense of self-worth, and a healthier lifestyle. Although both forms of therapy are beneficial and provide treatment for patients, they do have different aspects in which they focus on. Individual therapy focuses on the individual and their internal conflicts they may have. In this type of therapy individuals are engaged in a one-on-one relationship with their therapist. The therapy is centered around one client and they are able to self-reflect on their feelings and emotions.
The therapeutic process begins with the therapist conducting investigations on the lifestyle of clients in an attempt to identify their misperceived and misdirected goals. The central aim of therapy serves to “develop the client’s sense of belonging and to assist in the adoption of behaviors and processes characterized by community feeling and social interest” (Corey, 2013, p. 101). In looking at phase 1, the focus of Adlerian therapists is on establishing one on one contact with their clients. This relationship is formed through the processes of “listening; responding; demonstrating respect for clients’ capacity to understand purpose and seek change; and exhibiting faith, hope and caring” (Corey, 2013, p. 105). During this phase also, close attention is given to clients subjective experiences by therapists.
This type of perception helps the therapist to listen to key points in the story to help the client know the issue is not a usual part of their character and change and re-author the story. Story telling gives “…meaning to circumstances in lives” (pp. 212). It is used as a form of community work and counseling and encourages people to rely on their own skill sets to minimize the problems that exist in their everyday lives. It holds the belief that a person’s identity is formed by experiences or narratives.
These theories are usually hosen based on the client needs and what the counselor feel will be most effective. Counselors are not limited to just one theory when it comes to treating their clients. Theories can be used in conjunction with one another to effectively treat clients. Counseling does not just involve theories alone, it in involves some amount of talking with the person. The talking should be aimed at helping the person solve the problem(s), improve outlook, and/or aid in the client changing their behavior(s) (Woods, 2005).
