An advertisement is an announcement or notice promoting a service, product, or an event (Curtis). In simple words, advertisements are informative notice and its main purposes are to inform and persuade the public to purchase a product, donate to an organization, and/or attend an event. Advertisements could be in any form such as graphic, sign, symbol, script, audio, or video. They are usually found on billboards, in newspapers, magazines, television, radio, websites, blogs, and even in public and private places. Advertisements are also known as ads or commercials. Advertisements could also be a means for income as some companies such as Facebook and Twitter make money by posting advertisements on their webpage (Clarke). Advertisements often persuade consumers to purchase their product.
The word advertise originally comes from French word ad vertere which means to turn toward (“advertise”). Formally, advertisement can be said to have begun in 4000 BC (“The History of Advertising”). But it was not until late 19th century to early 20th century when advertisement volume began growing exponentially. Total advertising volume in United States jumped from nearly $200 million in 1880 to about $3 billion in 1920. After the industrial revolution, in 1880s, companies ranging from apparels to soaps to cigarettes came up with numerous ad-production techniques that would persuade buyers to purchase their product (“American Advertising: A Brief History.”). Advertising is expensive. Some companies spend up to $2.6 million for a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl (Rosehill). Effects of some advertisements could be very influencing and positive.

Advertisements are significant and necessary as they inform the consumer regarding the existence of a product. Without advertisements, it would be very difficult for consumers to find a product that is right for them. But it is also very important to control the emotions towards an ad and reconsider the claims claimed by the advertiser. Advertisements not only inform the people regarding new products or events but also persuade the people to purchase their product. Consumer must be able to determine the truthfulness of the claims an ad claims and then make the decision on whether or not to purchase a product. Often times, advertisements seduce consumer’s mind and consumers fail in controlling the innocent and emotional reaction towards the ad, and become the victim of misleading advertisements.
