Americans have different views when it comes to choosing between a monocultural or multicultural society, some believe that America will become more successful if it was to be monocultural, they also argue that many would get along better, there would be less racism, no one would be prejudiced and there would be no division among the people of today if it was to be monocultural based. Others say living in a monocultural is inefficient and also very destructive to society and favor living in a multicultural environment, stating that it broadens minds and teaches how to survive with other races, it helps in teaching respect, tolerance and the way of living. When people live in a monocultural society, they tend to lack respect for other people’s culture and religions. That’s is also where racism and being prejudiced falls into place. Americans who only believe in their way of life, believe that their race and culture are superior to all other races. They belittle other cultures, wanting nothing to do with them and treat other cultures as if they are beneath them. One example of this is Adolf Hitler and his hate of every race more specifically the people of Jewish decent, he believed the only type of person that should exist was a true German with blonde hair and blue eyes. When different cultures respect each other’s way of living, it is easier to survive around each other and they learn to appreciate others teachings and ways of life. When people are shown that their culture and way of living is greatly appreciated, it makes them want to welcome people more and it can also encourage them to want to learn about other cultures as well. We should accept everyone no matter the race, religion, culture or anything down to how they dress. Since we do, though, I want to give a few examples on how that is the case in the word more than how it is not. For example, the “The lonely death of Chanie Wenjack” story is about a boy who ran away from school but didn't make it home and died alone. Within that text, one part of a paragraph stated, “Even before Charlie ran away he was already running hard just to keep pace with the bewildering white world he had suddenly been thrust into.” This shows that culture has a huge impact on how people judge each other because for the boy to run away from school and have it at the time be a very racial environment was hard for him. People still judge now, but nothing where kids run away because of enforcement into a school like that. Another example would be, “And perhaps because they are Indians, no one seems to care very much. In the United States, there are a vast majority of ethnicities and races, which is why we are oftentimes recognized as “the melting pot”. Because of this, it may seem difficult to keep ethnic groups completely separate because there are interactions between different races every single day, even though some might not even be aware of it. Some people, especially ones from older generations, see this as an abomination because they feel that races must be kept pure and also feel that assimilation diminishes the uniqueness of one’s ethnic identity. However, would it not make a person more unique to be part of multiple cultures? According to an article aptly titled “Black? White? Asian? More Young Americans Choose All of the Above” by Susan Saulny, it is revealed that “Multiracial and multiethnic Americans are one of the country’s fastest-growing demographic groups” (NYtimes.com). Because 1 in 7 new marriages are interracial, the number of mixed race people is just going to keep increasing. With the way this is going, there could be very few people in the United States who identify with strictly one ethnic group or race. In a way, everyone is going to be the same (mixed race) but in different combinations, which would still make us all individuals. When this happens, America will be more unified and will be less full of prejudice as it always has seemed to be towards certain races.
There exist so many different societies and cultures in this world. Some like to discover and learn about new people and their ways of living but others can not seem to understand how a certain group of people can live in a different way from how they are living themselves. They simply do not want to accept other societies or cultures which can create clashes. This is something that was created socially, mainly by how people perceive ideas and other faces they are not quite used to. What are the causes of somebody looking at different cultures negatively? Race and ethnicity are two terms that are constantly used in today’s society. Understanding these terms can help people to recognize that color of skin or color of hair does not define a person. These terms connect with history, social interaction, and the overall make up of a person. However America is constantly obsessed with labeling people by the way that they look or the way that they act. America seems to encourage the terms race and ethnicity and continue to divide people into categories. It is interesting to comprehend these terms because they are not going to disappear any time soon. Race and ethnicity are apart of America’s history and will be a part of the future.
You don’t have to agree with everyone, but it is important to still respect their values and needs. There are people in our country who actually hate other cultures just because they are not their own. We all want for everyone to respect our own culture and beliefs, but we sometimes fail to return the favor. In the Bible, it says that we should always love our neighbors no matter the conditions. I think this will be the biggest challenge of becoming more sensitive to other cultures because of the ones who don’t like somebody only because they don’t agree with them.
The thing about multicultural education that surprised me the most was how much opposition there is to multicultural education. I would think, by now, people would be able to see how unbalanced the current educational curriculum is and welcome the inclusion of aspects from other cultures. I have read arguments ranging from, multicultural education is inherently racist to multicultural education promotes Islam and is indoctrinating our youth with terrorist ideas. Like most hot button issues in this country, people in positions of power will use everything possible, including fear-mongering, to further their agenda.
Living in a diverse world should be something a person should be proud of. Getting to know a person’s culture and their beliefs should be a wonderful ability. Respecting one another is important, even though a lot of people still disregard that, which should discontinue. We should all start to learn how to make this world a better place,
On the other end of the spectrum, multiculturalism is the proper way of bringing cultures together and helps to unify society.
Diversity should be respected and definitely noticed because it shows our uniqueness and self worth (McHale). Culture is a very strong part of everyone's life. Instead of trying to ignore our differences we should embrace differences and be proud of who we are. We can learn many different things if we give people who are culturally different from us a chance. Cultural diversity gives us an opening to learn about the uniqueness of the world. People can't go around wanting everything to be the same. They can't go tell themselves that cultures and differences aren't important (“Section 1”).
