Whenever I walk through the dorm building, I can always see people playing computer games anywhere. No matter it is a video game on the big television screen or an online game on the computer, people love to spend huge amount of time on them, through hours and hours of playing, trying to enjoy themselves. But at the same time of earning pleasure, there are some bad effects on playing computer games: lots of violence contained in video games; social isolation brought by playing games; health problems brought by long time of playing; and confusion between reality and fantasy by games. It really causes a lot of problems with playing computer games. Therefore I believe that computer games are having more harms than benefits. The violence contained in video games is a big problem for those young kids and most video games contain violence. A 2001 content analyses by the research organization Children Now shows that a great number of video games include violence, and half of them would result in serious injuries or death in the 'real' world. Children often say their favorite video games are violent. Dr. Anderson and colleagues have shown that playing a lot of violent video games is related to having more aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (Anderson &Bushman, 2001). Furthermore, “playing violent games is also related to children being less willing to be caring and helpful towards their peers. Importantly, research has shown that these effects happen just as much for non-aggressive children as they do for children who already have aggressive tendencies” (Anderson et al., under review; Gentile et al., 2004) The effect of being violent is even increased in games. And those children who wallow in the game world always do bad in their school work and other work, because they pay all their attention and time on their games. Every seconds for homework, for families, for classes, and even for sleeping are all taken for them to play computer games. Playing computer games, as a newly developed and spread activity, are attracting a lot of young kids playing with its own pleasure and charm. But at the time of enjoying the happiness and other advantages it may bring, we have to be cautious and recognize its bad effects like the violence contained the isolation it may bring, and the health problem it generates. Things are not worth doing if they have more problems than benefits, and that also works for computer games.
Children today are exposed to more graphic violence in video games compared to any past generations. This is because the media finds that making a profit, surpasses the lives of the adolescents that play these games. However, over time two set of views formed from the violence in video games. Since the 1970 video games have become more popular than ever before. Generating 11.7 billions of dollars of sells every year or more, the video game industry is considered one of the largest industries in this century. However, video games have been a topic of controversy. With the sales of violent video games going up and the increased violence in schools and teenagers, video games are always to blame. Many people speculate that video games are the cause on why many teenagers have developed aggressive and violent behavior, are desensitize to violence, and the increase violence in schools and public places. In contradiction, video games have little or no fault in teenagers’ violent behavior and shouldn’t always be blamed.
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
The purpose of this paper is to present a literature review on existing articles relating to the possibility of violent video games promoting aggressive behavior. The hypothesis set forth was that people who played non-violent video games displayed more Prosocial behavior versus those who played violent video games displayed more antisocial and aggressive behavior. A search was conducted on regular search engines on the internet, and on EBSCOhost using the title “can violent video games promote aggressive behavior.” The research articles presented are obtained from five case studies each focusing on different measures that were obtained, methods used, the participants involved, the designs of the study, and the results of the studies.

Some critics argue that video games are direct indicators of child aggression while video game supporters argue that there is no direct link between child aggression and violent video games. Video games now come in the form of millions of different categories and titles. Video game companies will do anything possible so that each game appeals to its audience. Games are also designed to be enjoyable for hours and have some sort of replay value. It causes people to excessively play video games and result in negative side effects. Why is the demographic of violent outbursts caused by video games predominantly focused on male, teenage Caucasians? Why are video games being portrayed in a more negative light when compared to other media mediums? These are all questions that I will be looking to answer in the paper.
