Many people in our world believe that they have the authority to determine someone else 's worth. In our society, people are being called degrading and horrible things constantly. This is known as bullying. Bullying is defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior towards an individual that is usually repeated over time. The way someone views themselves is important to their character and way of life. If a person is constantly told that they are "ugly" or "worth nothing", it might shape them into what they see in the mirror on a daily basis. Dark thoughts that result from bullying can lead to a dark way of life and even suicidal thoughts. Bullying should be a crime because it can lead to depression and suicide in some cases.
Bullies appear in all shapes and sizes. There is not a specific physical trait that they all carry. Although, mentally and emotionally bullies might be extremely similar. Most of the time, there is some type of deep insecurity within the bully that causes them to push it onto another person. A child or teen that does bully others are known to also be engaged in other various harmful activities. They are more likely to use drugs or alcohol and tend to engage in sexual activities earlier than the norm. A bully can be someone that is popular and has a high social status. This causes them to want to establish dominance and a position above everyone else. For example, the movie Mean Girls deals with this type of conflict. A character in this movie named Regina George made a "Burn Book" to establish her dominance. This book showcased gossip and rumors about students and teachers who attended her high school. Currently, there is no federal law that directly addresses bullying alone. Although, if the bullying overlaps with some form of harassment then it can open up a case. Some examples would be making violent or death threats, physically harassment, proof of text messages or comments on social media, and committing hate crimes. Federally funded schools are obliged to address the issue of bullying, although 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4% of the time (stompoutbullying.org). Bullying in general should become a crime because of the affect it has on society and the victims. It is not taken as seriously as it should be taken in our society today.
Remember being a little kid and being pushed down on the playground, being picked last in middle school, or being called horrible names in high school? Those are just a few examples of how people are bullied. A person who repeatedly physically or verbally torments or harasses someone in anyway is bullying (“Bullying” par. 1). It unfortunately happens almost everywhere. It’s a huge problem that is beginning to take over schools. Middle school is an especially troublesome time because this is the time where kids are just trying to be accept by others and they are the most vulnerable. (“Verbal” par. 4) There are tragic stories of suicides and teenagers cutting themselves everywhere because of being bullied and finally they’ve reached their last straw. (“Verbal” par. 4) Which makes since because kids who are being bullied are twice as likely to commit suicide compared to someone who is not being bullied. (Murray par. 5) Suicide has hit number three on what kills teenagers in the United States. (Murray par. 6) Victims who become bullied are normally people who try to separate themselves from conflict. (“Bullies” par. 7) They normally are “loners” or “outcasts”, which makes them more vulnerable to become the victim. (“Bullies” par. 7) They may like different types of music, dress unlike others, or have a disability. Bullies can be independent, but mostly bullies like to have admirers encouraging their ruthless behavior. When adult cliques bully other people, they usually focus on people who are possible rivals. Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Cyber bullying can include sending out mean or threatening emails and instant messages about a person, spreading rumors about someone and also include photos that a person would consider to be humiliating. In the past few years, bullying has gotten so bad that people decided to take their own lives to escape the pain. Bullies use violent behaviors to harm their victims verbally and physically. Usually, the victim is too frightened to fight back and too embarrassed to inform adults. People choose to bully others for a broad range of reasons (media or the want for power), but not getting love and attention from dysfunctional families is the main reason ("Why do people bully?" n.d.). In the end, however, everyone experiences consequences. The bullies become lonely and violent while the victims suffer from depression. Family and societal issues have led many people to become aggressive and think that it is permissible to deliberately humiliate others; they will then gain an overwhelming power and a sense of autonomy from watching their victims' pain, which causes them to not realize the negative outcomes that they might encounter like loneliness, depression, and possibly even death.
People actually believe that words can 't harm you. There are even people that have faith that the victims even deserve it. They would say "Oh there was something else wrong with that kid other than bullying ' '. People tend to blame it on ' 'mental illness ' '. People also assume, that if you get harassed there is an explanation behind it, whether it 's what you wear, your skin color, you are a heavy person, or you are an outsider. It has been shown that envy and resentment may motivate victimization, other reasons to bully may be due to low self-esteem where the bullies cover themselves by demeaning others. Some study has shown that shame and anxiety boost self-esteem. The behavior may also arise due to jealousy or it may be due to previous bullying at some stage of their lives. Studies show that in the past five years, online bullying has quadrupled (M. Ross, 3).
