Why I want to pursue a career in social work Putting into words how I feel when I’ve made a difference in someone’s life is almost impossible. It’s something I feel deep inside and very passionate about. Working with geriatrics and terminal patients is where my passion lies. Maybe it’s because of my close relationship with my grandparents. I honestly don’t know. One thing I know…I’ve always loved the elderly. I was always the little girl wanting to visit and talk with them when my friends were off being typical children. Nearing the end of one’s life is a difficult and emotional time for everyone involved, and it’s my desire is to make this transition as smooth as possible. Two years ago when I started my first semester, my mother was living with me, and at 63 diagnosed with early dementia, which led to severe depression and the need for her to be placed in assisted living. I managed to successfully deal with this and other family troubles, while maintaining an average GPA of 3.6, and I made Dean’s List twice. Accomplishing my goals while dealing with this type of stress was only possible due to stress management tools I utilize daily. Meditation, regular walks and hikes with my dog, and escaping to enjoy the stillness of the woods to re-group are other tools I use. During unusually stressful days, I will go for a jog and then soak in the tub with candles and lavender oil. All of these tools have kept me grounded, strong and able to perform well under pressure. In the past when I’m more overwhelmed than usual, I find talk therapy works very well, and simply being able to discuss problems with people who are not personally involved helps a great
