Reflection Of Writing: My Approach To Critical Reading Writing

In deciding to take Composition 1 my first semester in college my thought process was in short, “might as well get this over and done with.” I did not expect to enjoy coming to class Monday evenings for wonderful discussions over a wide variety of topics regarding life and the world domestically and abroad. To be earnest, I expected to be bored to death for three hours a week as I painfully wrote inadequate papers that would no doubt have been equally unpleasant to read. Knowing how much of a contrast to what is and what I thought the first day of how the class would go, I’m very proud to say I have a better understanding of the writing process. Not to say I was a poor reader or that I never understood what I read before, but that I have learned to place myself within what I’m reading. Placing myself within the writer’s shoes and the target audience’s shoes, I will forever understand writing more within books, short stories, and news. When I would read the short stories and articles for the critical review assignments I took your advice in rereading at least once before I took notes on the main topics of the article this helped pick out which information to consider more important to refer to. After deciding the main point of the article, I would highlight supporting facts and information to surround the main topic statement or question. Throughout the process I would form my own opinions on the subject such if the writing was biased or irrelevant in today’s world. I found it easy to discuss my topic Jimi Hendrix, but difficult to find reliable sources on him. I first looked at articles and interviews about him/involving him, but this only provided so much as he was a very difficult person to talk to beyond the music. He never talked about his childhood to be broadly, his speech was often encrypted when asked about his personal life even with those close to him. The best sources I ended up finding were documentaries involving several individual that were close to him at one time or continuously throughout his life. Even if they are considered primary sources on his life my greatest frustration was that all of which I wrote through their narration of him could be wrong. Aside from my frustration I learned to search through many sources in order to find the best information available for a topic. Going to one source would no doubt have been easy, but by looking at an abundance of sources I found better more in depth information while seeing the many opinions people had on my topic.

Before this class I had used MLA format multiple times in high school and even in middle school. It was relatively easy to format my informative essay in the assigned format, I had to review what I was doing a tad bit but overall I think I did a good job following the directions of it. I used a website to create a bibliography that made the process quite painless. Anything that I didn’t quite remember
