Students with specific learning disabilities are just one of the 13 groups granted educational rights under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004. Recent numbers indicate that students categorized as learning disabled make up 3.5 percent of the total school population. “Although students with learning disabilities typically have average or above average intelligence, they usually display weaknesses in one or more areas of cognition, including attention, perception, memory, and thinking/processing” (Friend, 2014, p. 143). Despite the presence of a learning disability, Federal law mandates that whenever possible that students should receive their education in the least restrictive environment (LRE), preferably in the general education classroom along with their peers. I had the opportunity to interview a local public school teacher about her experiences in connection with students having learning disabilities. The teacher is a general education, fifth-grade teacher at an elementary school in the Tipton County Schools district.
Initially, the teacher was asked how students with learning disabilities receive their education in her classroom. She shared that most students qualified as learning disabled receive the majority of their education in her classroom. She participates in inclusion with a special education teacher. Some students are pulled out of the general classroom to receive special education services in a one-on-one setting. The amount of time that students with learning disabilities receive their education within the general classroom setting is specified in percentages determined by each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP). Although students with learning disabilities generally have average to above average intellectual abilities, it would be a reasonable assumption that most would attend college or enter the workforce successfully. However, that is not the case in many situations pertaining to students with learning disabilities. Reasons associated with this trend are usually summarized in the access students have to the general education curriculum, and the level of expectation placed upon them by their teachers. Because we teach in an era when an understanding of multiple-intelligences and differentiated instruction exist, it should never be said that a student couldn’t be taught because they didn’t learn like the other students. The truth is, none of our students learn exactly alike and for that reason we, as teachers must do a more effective job in ensuring their success.
