Although students with learning disabilities generally have average to above average intellectual abilities, it would be a reasonable assumption that most would attend college or enter the workforce successfully. However, that is not the case in many situations pertaining to students with learning disabilities. Reasons associated with this trend are usually summarized in the access students have to the general education curriculum, and the level of expectation placed upon them by their teachers. Because we teach in an era when an understanding of multiple-intelligences and differentiated instruction exist, it should never be said that a student couldn’t be taught because they didn’t learn like the other students. The truth is, none of our students learn exactly alike and for that reason we, as teachers must do a more effective job in ensuring their success.
