Spartan Society
In 431 B.C.E during the civil war in China, two Greek city-states fought for the control of the Greek world. The two Greek city-states were called Sparta and Athens. This unforgettable tale of ancient Greek civilization began when the Greeks arrival in 1900 B.C.E. The Greek era was compacted with stories of battles, conflict, and glory. It was known as “Classical Greece” which ended with the death of Alexander the Great. (Duiker, W. pg. 91) In the southeastern Peloponnesus peninsula of Greece comes the story of the Spartan Society. Located in the city-state of Sparta a militaristic society was ruled by two kings. It all began with the desire to ensure control over Laconian and Messenian helots; the Spartans made the decision to become a military state. (Duiker, W. pg. 91)
Sparta was an agricultural, slave state. Sparta covered a wide range of land; the land was divided up between the citizens of Sparta. Each Sparta family assumed enough land to comfortably house a family. It was not known whether it was an equal sum of land for all, but that it was sufficient enough. With this vast area of land came a need for farming, and they needed enough workers to complete the labor. This battle would determine that direction of Western culture. The battle began in what is now known as Iran in the fifth century BC. Xerxes was familiar with Athenians, but he had no idea the strength of the Spartans. The Spartans were in Greece’s most powerful city-state. When he asked the Spartans if they would ever submit, he was told that no Spartan would ever stand down.
