Smoking cessation is the process of terminating the practice of smoking tobacco (Medical Dictionary, 1998). For the uninitiated, it is a seemingly straightforward task, albeit for an average smoker, it is easier said than done. In this day and age one need not look any further than colleagues, acquaintances, friends or even family members who have succumbed to smoking and see how much of a struggle it is in the event that a smoker opts to quit, with some succeeding where most would fail in the attempt. This is not surprising considering that cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine (Taghavi et al., 2012), a main component of tobacco, which can be just as addictive as heroin or cocaine, hence making smoking cessation exceptionally difficult. …show more content…

Coronary heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses, blindness and cancers, especially lung cancer, are on top of the list of diseases associated with smoking. While it is advantageous for a smoker to stop any time, the urgency to quit as soon as possible is vital in order to cut the risk of contracting serious diseases stemming from smoking. Quitting smoking cuts cardiovascular risks (Benjamin, 2011). Every nurse has a contribution to make in addressing health problem such as smoking-related illness through prevention rather than treatment. This project aims to outline the different measures to promote, improve, rehabilitate and ultimately save the lives of patients who are affected by tobacco use. Moreover, this project put an emphasis on how nurses can actively take part in the advocacy for antismoking and the advancement of smoking cessation. This project will help enhance the student’s knowledge in smoking cessation, its health impact, and the different methods used to quit smoking. The project will be of great importance to the nursing profession because it will support the need for extensive and broad research in order to prevent smoking-related deaths.
