Questionable Ingredients of Non Organic Food

Walking through the continuously open hole at the front of the super market, a gush of warm air surrounded me and seemed to take my memory of items to buy as I walked through it. Meandering through the produce section, I pulled out my trusty list and began to read through it. Grocery shopping was a newly awarded task to me since getting my own car and I was eager to fulfill it. However, I often found myself starring at several items, all technically the one thing I needed, and I would be clueless as to which one was healthiest, preferred by the family, or was of the best quality. After a few months of this weekly phenomenon, I decided to do some research on the differences between organic and non-organic products. Seeing that I was raised in an all organic household, I was pleasantly surprised when reading the requirements for organic foods. Crops must be grown without synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMO’s), petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers; any that are used have extensive restrictions and are monitored closely. As well as the fact that livestock are given access to the outdoors, organic feed with no animal-by-products, no antibiotics are used unless the animal is sick, and no growth hormones are given to them (Paul). These restrictions lead to food that is safer for people with food allergies, less cross contamination, as well as it being better for the welfare of the animals and the environment. With practices that reduce pollution and soil erosion while also increasing soil fertility and using less energy my green side had never been so pleased. Feeling a new sense of pride for my use of all organic food I decided to see what type of synthetic food additives I was avoiding... ... middle of paper ... ...tion of food for the cheapest possible expenditure to the manufacturer. If quality ingredients were used in conjunction with local manufactures more preservatives and other food additives would be rendered useless. Works Cited Paul, Maya W., Gina Kemp, and Robert Segal.
