Reflection On Special Education

Social Class I had never been to a soup kitchen or homeless shelter before being asked to volunteer at one in middle school. My 8th grade student council advisor had arranged for us to volunteer at a soup kitchen helping to clean and serve. This is when I fully realized that there were people out there much less fortunate then myself. I grew up with two parents who work, and never really wanted for anything; we lived in a modest sized home, and owned nice vehicles. We always had food in the refrigerator, and clothes on our backs; however, now I was getting acquainted with a world where people did not have enough food to eat or homes to live in. I am a strong advocate for giving students with this physical, emotional, and learning disabilities every service and opportunity to grow and learn that I can manifest. As I have revisited these experiences and events some have made me happy to share, and some have made me a little reticent to share. Overall, these experiences have shaped me into being the open, honest, intelligent, and generous man that I am today. Moreover, I wrote this wanting to understand how I became the educator that I am today. Throughout my writing, I have been forthright in my experiences, and have enjoyed revisiting these events. Ultimately, I think writing this autobiography has allowed me to understand that I am fully comfortable in my understanding and tolerating those that are different then myself.
