Today, many foods are produced artificially. Not only are these foods unhealthy for humans, but the processes to make them can do severe damage to the environment. Organic agriculture can help change this trend. It is overall healthier for humans to consume and it is beneficial to the environment. The preservation of land and consumption of natural, organic foods are the top pushes to make organic agriculture the way of the future. Making the switch to organic produce can be a big decision. People have many things to consider such as the price, convenience, and whether they are truly ready to make this leap. Many plants and animals return to the same are to thrive in subsequent years. There is a greater number of beneficial insects to help promote crop growth and development. Even though a farmer may be short on acreage, it is crucial that the crops still be able to fully develop. When the crops return each season, they adapt to the environment. At the gene level, “traditional and adapted seeds are preferred for their greater resistance to disease and resilience to climatic stress”1. Wildlife tend to thrive in areas surrounding organic farms due to the decreased chemical contamination that is found in high concentration near industrial agricultural factories. These species in combination with the plants grown organically, help optimize nutrient and energy cycling in the ecosystem1. Additionally rotating crops that are seldom found in the environment can help to use the surplus of unused nutrients, allowing the depleted sources to rebuild soil fertility and restore the balance of soil nutrients. The lack of pesticide use and attracting new or re-colonizing species to the organic area help to increase the benefits of organic farming and create a healthier gene pool from which adaptation occurs1. In addition to benefitting plant and animal life in the area, it can also be healthier for humans and their offspring. Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides can pollute the air we breathe. If a pregnant mother is inhaling these toxins, it may not have any affect on her but the child she is carrying may suffer greatly. It seems like an odd issue, but the answer is quite simple. These pesticides were tested based on the tolerance of adults, not of children3. Even low level exposure to these chemicals on a regular basis can have astounding effects.
