Two men, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, founded Mercedes-Benz in the early 20th century. Karl Benz was born on 25 November, 1844 in Karlsruhe, Germany, and was the son of an engine driver ("KARL BENZ MERCEDES). Throughout the early life of Karl Benz, he showed a genuine predisposition toward the mechanics of machinery, which inspired him to take a career in the field. Benz then attended Karlsruhe grammar school and went on to the Karlsruhe Polytechnic. This allowed Benz to get a deeper understanding of engineering. Between the years 1864 and 1870, he worked for a number of different firms as a draughtsman, designer and works manager before founding his first firm in 1871 in Mannheim, with August Ritter ("KARL BENZ MERCEDES).
