There is not a person in America who does not know of the Disney Company. From movies, to television shows, to theme parks, Disney is everywhere and everyone loves it. If a group of people were to be asked “What’s your favorite Disney movie?” every single person would be able to give an answer. Children all over the world dream of going to a Disney park. People all over the world look at Walt Disney’s journey to success as a tale of triumph; a tale about believing yourself and overcoming obstacles. But how did this empire get to where it is today? What is it about Disney that keeps people coming back for more? And just how many secrets can a company this large hold? In fact, elements in older Disney films still remain relevant in their films today, long after Disney’s death. For example, Disney has always relied heavily on elements of nature in their films. Often, animators at Disney will use nature in a certain scene to convey what is going on. For example, in Snow White scenes the atmosphere consists of vibrant plant life and cute animal creatures. And when the evil queen is around, the atmosphere is rocky and barren and has dead plants. The same can be said for newer films, such as WALL-E. “WALL-E’s opening premise is of a future world where rampant consumerism has exacted such a toll on the earth’s ecosystem that it has become an uninhabitable wasteland – a landscape shaped by mountains of trash and empty skyscrapers, where dust storms scour the surface daily and organic life forms appear to have been virtually eliminated” (Whitley, 2012). There’s no doubt about it: Disney knows their way around animation. Disney is also good at keeping up with pop culture, as seen in Pinocchio, when the blue fairy is “a glamor girl, her Hollywood face reflecting the ‘new world’ ideal whose allure could be easily marketed” (Clark, 2001). With their classic and versatile art style, Disney is able to stand out among other companies as well as remain relevant with our always changing society.
