A cigarette is a thin tube of fine cut tobacco rolled in paper for smoking. There are roughly 600 ingredients in cigarettes, at least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many of the others are poisonous. When cigarettes burn they create more than 7,000 chemicals. These chemicals harm nearly every organ in the body. Chemicals found in cigarettes include; acetone which is found in nail polish remover, ammonia found in common household cleaners, cadmium an active component in battery acid, methanol which is a main component in rocket fluid, etc. Tobacco use is the primary preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States. On top of the effects of the toxins on the heart and lungs, you also have the risk of cancers and diseases, and chronic health issues. Smoking affects the cardiovascular system in many ways. Individuals’ who smoke are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, a disease that affects the heart and blood vessels. By smoking an individual increases their risk of strokes and coronary heart disease; which is the leading cause of deaths in the United States. A stroke occurs when a clot blocks the blood flow to part of your brain when a blood vessel in or around your brain bursts. Even individuals’ who smoke less than four cigarettes daily can show signs of cardiovascular disease. Other effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system are; raised blood pressure and heart rate, constriction of blood vessels, less oxygen carried in the blood, damage to lining of the arteries, and reduced blood flow to extremities. The second most known is the respiratory system. Smoking can cause damage to the housekeeping of the respiratory system. The mucus formed by the respiratory tubules traps dirt and disease-causing organisms, which cilia sweep near the mouth, where it can be removed, smoking impairs this process. Because cigarette smoke is acidic and contains so many different chemical it can cause irritation to the lining of the bronchi and bronchioles which is known as chronic bronchitis. The lining then becomes inflamed and swollen and may also become infected. Each time you smoke you can add to the irritation. This can last for months or even years, this causes shortness of breath, coughing, and chest pains. The majority of respiratory cancers are attributed to smoking. The tar that is contained in cigarette smoke can coat the lining of the alveoli and will greatly increase the risk of emphysema.
