Smoking is one of the leading killers in North America and innocent
people shouldn't die because of it. For years people have been smoking
in public thinking 'it's my body, I can do whatever I want to it,' but
now that it has been proven that smoking not only harms the smoker,
but also those around him or her, they should not be allowed to smoke
around other people in public. Smoking in public places causes a
considerable amount of harm to people and the government should be
doing more to protect citizens

what they were inhaling they would probably quit immediately.

Some of the ingredients contained in cigarettes are a type of rat
poison, a type of paint stripper, a type of toilet cleaner, lighter
fuel, the chemical found in mothballs, poison that was once used in
gas chambers and there is even a type of rocket fuel found in

contain harmful substances, but they also can cause erectile

years it had been thought that smoking only affected smokers and
non-smokers were not at risk at all, but after years of research it
has been found that second-hand smoke from cigarettes causes much harm
to non-smokers. Now after years of study, it is known that in America,
someone is more likely to die from second-hand smoke than by a car,

According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, it stated that the nicotine in smoking cigarettes can be very dangerous, damaging to the human body. It’s known that smoking can cause chronic lung disease, coronary heart disease and stroke. In addition, smoking also causes cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, mouth, and bladder. Smoking tobacco products is also known to contribute to cancer of cervix, pancreas and kidneys. People that don’t smoke tobacco products can also be harmed by second hand smoke. Women who smoke while pregnant, put their baby at risk of have health problems.
E-cigarettes have heating elements that are battery operated and hold cartridges of nicotine and other liquids and flavoring. They were produced to assist those who are trying to quit smoking or reduce the amount of nicotine that is actually inhaled in the body to make it a safer product for the consumer than actually smoking a cigarette. There is controversy on whether or not this product promotes a safer nicotine habit or stimulates someone to begin smoking habits. Most importantly, those who do not smoke at all are concerned whether or not the secondhand smoke emitted from these devices is harmful for those who do not wish to inhale nicotine products. There are states laws that restrict smoking in public areas and now the question is should e-cigarettes be restricted in public areas as well?

People often turn to cigarettes to suppress hunger or relieve stress (Dichter). After a short period of time, a person can become addicted to the satisfaction they get from smoking a cigarette. It is these chemicals that make cigarettes, as well as other tobacco products, so addictive to their users.
Cigarette smoking is very harmful for both smoker, non- smokers and the environment. People who smoke in just show how inconsiderate they are towards others. Even the people who do not smoke in public places are selfish. They do not consider the affect smoking might have on them and how that will affect their family and the environment. According to the World Health Organization, worldwide, approximately 5 million people die yearly from smoking. In the United States, the number of smoking-related deaths from 2000 to 2004 was 443,000, of which 49,000 were estimated to be from secondhand smoke. Smoking cigarettes with tobacco is very dangerous and the number of people who smoke are hurting themselves and others. Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death, killing over 1,500 people a day according to the CDC. The death toll is insane and should be stopped.
Some of the chemicals found in cigarettes are Acetone, which is found in nail polish remover and Acetic Acid, an ingredient in hair dye. A common household cleaner called ammonia is found in tobacco cigarettes. Arsenic used in rat poison, is used in tobacco products also. Benzene which is found in rubber cement and Butane which is used in lighter fluid is found in cigarettes as well. An active component in battery acid called Cadmium and carbon monoxide are also chemicals found in cigarettes. Formaldehyde, hexamine and lead are chemicals present in cigarettes. Should cigarette smoking be banned for everyone in the United States? Why? Why not? Should those who chose their time smoking to relieve stress, personal enjoyment, or simply just because, have to lose their right to what makes them happy? Smoking tobacco products has been around for decades and in many different forms. Should personal rights be pushed aside to please those around us that disagree with the so called “disgusting habit”? In the paper The Washington Times an article caught my interest called”D.C. seeks bans on smoking in national parks” written by Steven Dinan. In this article he stated that “Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton wrote Park Service Regional Director Steve Whitesell saying she’s heard from constituents who fear breathing second-hand smoke while using national parks.”(Dinan, 2013) I don’t think they should. All throughout the world people do things that is not always agreed with in different cultures in communities but even religions. Some people believe eating red meat is a sin but should you take it away from those who enjoy it. We are living in the land of the free. Aren’t we? I am against the banning of tobacco products because not only is it a right as an American citizen to be able to smoke, it is a job for American citizens, and as long as smokers are knowledgeable about the product causes it should be a personal right to choose.

The sale of cigarettes and tobacco is a multi-billion dollar industry, but is it truly worth all the problems that stem from their use. Health care costs are extremely high due to all the health problems associated with cigarettes and tobacco. Even though research has proven time and time again the harmful effects of cigarettes, and the rising cost of health care caused by cigarettes our government will not take a stand and stop all manufacturing of the horrible toxins.
Those opposing a smoking ban say that freedom of choice would be affected by such legislation. Some people against a ban say that smoking bans damage business. A smoking ban could lead to a significant fall in earnings from bars, restaurants and casinos. Another argument is that the smoker has a basic human right to smoke in public places, and the ban is a limitation for smokers’ rights. Businesses, smokers, publicans, tobacco industries, stars, and some of the non-smokers oppose public smoking ban. Smokers light a cigarette because they need to smoke, not because they want it, because nicotine is physically addictive. Therefore, some smokers think that the public smoking ban is oppressiveness. They see the ban as a treatment to smokers as second-class citizens. Smokers agree that the smoking ban benefits the world, but cannot support the ban, because effects of nicotine obstruct them.
