How many horror stories have you heard about abuse? How many times did you think it was okay? How many times have you heard that it leads to more violent crimes? How many times have you heard of someone that did not get in trouble for it? These are the things that we should all be thinking about every day. Animals have no way to voice their own opinion and pain, so we must speak for them. There are endless forms of animal cruelty. Cruelty and abuse come in forms of pet neglecting, torture, animal testing, dog fighting, mental abuse, physical abuse, farm factoring, ect… Many people believe that animals do not feel pain, and do not deserve the same rights as human beings, but is that right? Thousands of animals are tortured in their own ways each day, and we let it happen. There should be harsher punishments, and more strict laws against Animal Cruelty. The real question is what is cruelty?
Cruelty is when a human being shows enough disrespect to physically, verbally, or mentally damage an innocent animal (Paws). There are endless forms of animal cruelty. One form is a story from England early in 2014. (Johnson) A woman placed her four month old kitten in the microwave for one excruciating minute as punishment for eating her goldfish. She originally set the microwave for five minutes, but realized her mistake and pulled the kitten from the microwave after one minute. Cunliffe tried unsuccessfully to cool the kitten down by placing him in cold water, which put him into shock. The kitten suffered a slow and very painful death. Laura Cunliffe was sentenced to fourteen weeks in the county jail, and was banned from having anymore pets. Slaughter. Torture. Neglected. Starvation. Everyday innocent animals have to face these consequences because of us. Animals can show more love and affection to us than we humans can. Animals are not only subjects to animal testing, fur farming, breeding, factory farming, dog fighting, but also many other purposes. Animal cruelty perfectly epitomizes the fact that animals can show more compassion, respect to others. A dog, otherwise known as a “man’s best friend” always has this thing called a collar, choked on its neck. So does that mean we in return have to wear a collar too, being pulled in the direction that the dog wants to go, never having the chance to go where we want, do what we want? A young orca forcefully separated from their mother to be enslaved into performing at water parks eternally. Not only that, they are enclosed in these small cages and have to spend endless hours cramped up in that tight space. The pool they swim in is far smaller than what they can swim in if they were free, off in the wild. Is that fair to them that for our satisfaction and pleasure, these animals are deprived from their perfect live? As Christine Stevens had said, “The basis of all animal rights should be the Golden Rule: we should treat them as we would wish them to treat us, were any other species in our dominant position.”

Robert Gonzales is only one of many people to commit animal cruelty. Kevin Brunson was also accused of harming an animal. He starved his dog, Rambo, until he weighed only fifty-one pounds. A normal dog his size would weigh around one hundred and twenty-five pounds. Rambo was seventy-four pounds underweight. A dog named, Lacey had scabbing around the eyes and other injuries from being abused. “Lashawn Whitehead of Greensboro, admitted to police that she beat her dog for fifteen minutes, then set it on fire. The dog ran away, and she was found. Her injuries were burned ears, a broken jaw, and teeth. She was adopted into a new loving family.” (Cawthon 2) All animals are affected when it comes to animal abuse. Horses have been reported to be starved and in very poor living conditions. Owners don’t clean stalls, feed the animals, or take care of the horses grooming needs. The horses become depressed to due to the lack of care they receive. Sixteen horses were found at Gina Rapuano’s Farm, Apache, Willy, and Destiny are merely three of the horses greatly in need of care. Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Animal cruelty is a rapidly growing nationwide problem. Animals are being battered and starved everyday. There are many forms of animal cruelty; some forms are scientific research, abandonment, and mistreatment.
Animal cruelty, also called animal abuse, is the harming of animals or not caring for an animal responsibly. It is against the law to abuse animals, especially for personal benefit. Animal cruelty is a global problem that cannot be easily solved. In Indonesia, more than 100 animals are abused each year, whether they are dogs, cats or even cows. The most common form of animal cruelty is abandonment of animals by heartless owners that treat them like they are a piece of trash.
Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. There is animal experimenting, animal abuse, and mistreatment of animals. and through revealing the results from research, one discovers the horrific effects of animal abuse.
Executive Summary Every 60 seconds, an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Animal abuse is a travesty in our world that must be stopped. Every year, millions of animals suffer because of human actions, directly or indirectly. Whether it’s abused dogs and cats or even mistreated circus animals, their suffering is as real as it would be if it happened to us. Even animals who are raised on farms simply for human consumption should not have to suffer. One of the worst parts of humanity’s role in animal abuse is that there are easy ways for people to help that they are either ignorant of or simply refuse to do. There are many examples of animals who are abused by humans, but there are also ways for people to help prevent and put an end to animal abuse.
“Man is the highest rated animal, at least among all the animals who returned the questionnaire (Brault, 2009).” For years humans have been using animals for experimentation, food, clothing, sport and entertainment, manual labor, and let us not forget man’s best friend. The unethical treatment of animals can best be resolved by deontology contrasted with ethical egoism.
Throughout the history of the world, there have been subjects of heated debates; there are a few facts that are undisputed. One of the undisputed facts is that animals existed and inhabited the planet before humans did and humans have been dependent on animals for thousands of years. Animals have played a very vital part in our history and one wonders whys should they be treated with much cruelty. While animals have been a great resource, a steady supply of food and clothing and even security, our treatment towards them has become nothing short of appalling. Since humans are dependent on animals for their well being, their comfort and at times their religion, there should be a moral obligation to treat animals.
