My Writing Reflection

As a writer, I would like to think that I have progressed a little bit throughout the semester. From the Doyle essay to the Food and Identity paper, there has been some improvements. I feel I have improved when it comes to writing papers that need sources like the what if essay and the food and identity essay. I feel like my creativity aspect has improved a little due to the Doyle essay. This class has also helped me gain a different perspective of other people’s ideas and opinions. I think that is the most helpful thing that I have used while making progress on my writing. Having different perspectives helps me write without having a bias to something. The workshops, whether online as a discussion board or in class, allow me to get feedback from others besides Professor Carter. It gave me a chance to have other perspectives besides my own. Although some of the feedback was not helpful as it was generic or not useful for my piece of writing. The discussion boards also helped me with writing. On some, I questioned why something was believed to be a certain way, but on others, I argued with point of views. It also allowed me to explore different perspectives once again. I guess the whole class helped me as it allowed me to explore different perspective that I never realized or have seen. Although some of the things I did not agree with, it still opened my eyes to a whole new world. A world that I did not realize affected mine. I would write them, reread them, and then edit them. I found it that free writing helped me just think and write everything down without worrying if it made sense or if it went along with my other points. Before this class, I never did free writing. I normally would just start with the introduction and continue the paper from there, but that was not the case this semester. Like with the Doyle Essay, I wrote an introduction and free wrote my paper, allowing my thoughts to just flow and once I was finished, I went back and deleted my introduction because it was not needed. Something else that surprised me is how much I feel the need to write now. I am surprised by how peaceful and calming it is to me. I have found myself writing simply because I am upset, angry or happy. I have always found myself wanting to write more lyrical essays. I have found a new writing style that I have fallen in love with because it is challenging, but exciting at the same time. I also learned that I tend to write better if I am writing in the dark and have music playing through headphones. I have yet to figure out why this works for me when writing because it does not work when I am working on other homework. But I usually get my best ideas at night, so I feel that if I write in the dark, my mind is more open to ideas and
