Failure of Higher Education Higher education is forced upon high school students awaiting to graduate in the United States. Students ask themselves if it is worth doing so in the long run. This decision is decided on many factors and one of them is that is it worth it. Factors such as personal goals and parental expectations influence students to steer towards a certain direction. Some would agree that it is worth the time and effort and attend a four-year university or similar and others will go directly into the work force or the service. This thought process occurs not only in higher education, but from K-12 as well. Students are expected to achieve high grades to determine their future. For example, SAT and ACT scores decide one’s qualifications for a certain university or college. Although high grades and good test scores correlate to being successful at some extent, schools should teach more than just that. But high test scores and good grades don’t always measure student’s intelligence in a field. There are many factors that could prevent intelligent students from doing well in a class because not everyone is good at everything. Intelligence should not be based on one’s GPA but rather one’s motive to learn and desire to become successful. College is not for everyone. Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, authors of “Should Everyone Go to College?” states that, “For certain schools, majors, occupations, and individuals, college may not be a smart investment. By telling all young people that they should go to college no matter what, we are actually doing some of them a disservice” (209). The authors is emphasizing that college is not and should not have to be for everyone because everyone has different goals. Forcing students to attend a higher learning institute also causes negative impacts by steering them towards what they are not aiming
In the essay, “We Send Too Many Students To College” by Marty Nemko, he argues that, contrary to popular belief, college is not for everybody. Nemko states that colleges accept numerous high school graduates every year, when they know that if the student did not do well in high school, they have a very low chance of actually acquiring a degree. However, If someone is fortunate enough to graduate from college and obtained a degree that costed them an exceptional amount of money, it is likely that they will have to settle for a job they could have “landed as a high school dropout”. In spite this argument, I believe the purpose of college is to prepare me for a good, well- paying job when I graduate. The purpose of this essay is to explain to the readers that most people start off with the idea of living the American Dream. Which is practically going to college to have a better life and career. But over the time the idea of working very hard for a Bachelor’s degree has become very dimmed. Owen and Sawhill discuss how even though college may be very helpful for many people, for some the benefits of a college education do not outweigh the costs. In discussing this, they compare statistics on the costs of college and general student success. Overall, this article does a very good job showing ethical appeals with statistics and showing logic with factual evidence, but only does an average job appealing to emotion.

In Louis Menand’s “Live and Learn: Why We Have College” he discusses his three theories about the purpose of higher education. The first theory says “college is, essentially, a four-year intelligence test”(57). This meritocratic theory is saying that “society wants to identify intelligent people early on … to get the most of its human resources” and college is the machine that does the sorting (57). The second theory, the democratic one, claims the point of college is not to pick out the elite. Rather, the point is to “expose future citizens to material that enlightens and empowers them” (58). Charles Murray, the author of “What’s Wrong With Vocational School?” discusses how too many of today’s high school graduates wrongfully head off to a four-year college. For a large majority of the population, a college education is unnecessary. Murray says that a lot of students don’t even want an advanced education. Even if they do want an education, they aren’t qualified for it. Additionally, a large number of these students are striving for an education or experience that a four-year college isn’t meant to fulfill.
In “College Is a Waste of Time and Money,” Caroline Bird, a college lecturer makes very good and valid points that college is wasting time and money. She describes how society has pushed students into getting higher education right out of high school. Leaving us with the question, are students getting a higher degree of education to better their future or to keep them busy and paying an institution.
It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
