The rise of Catholicism led to the construction of multiple religious buildings. When advances were made in the world of art, they were quickly translated to the field of architecture. The Catholic church was quick to embrace these new designs. As a result, we see even today true masterpieces of art in the form of cathedrals. The distinguished Winchester cathedral in Great Britain is a prime example of Romanesque architecture. From the grand stone walls to the beautiful tiled floors, every aspect of the building is a different work of art. Development of the structure began in the year 648. Several Bishops who passed through Winchester left their mark on the building. The styles of architecture found in Winchester varies from Romanesque to late Gothic. The crypt and transepts are the parts of the modern structure that best show how the building looked in the first stage. In the 1200s, the next stage began under the direction of bishop Godfrey de Lucy. The main contribution was retochoir, which was designed in the Gothic style. In the early 1300s, the presbytery was added by Bishop Henry Woodcock. The final additions were made in the 1400s and 1500s by Bishop William of Wykeham. Even smaller churches, like the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile, AL include a crypt. The crypt underneath Notre Dame is ancient. Archeological studies are still being done and new information is uncovered with each revitalized dig. It is the site of some of the earliest structures in Paris and the cathedral is built directly on top of it. The crypt at Winchester is far more more stable and less ancient that that of Paris.
