The exterior is stuccoed brick which was then whitewashed, giving the cathedral a vibrant yet pure aura complimented by rich, light brown accents. Both the blue spires and the whitewashed stuccoe were not original parts of the building but were added by The Right Reverend Thomas A. Becker in 1896. The Gothic styles seen executed in this cathedral are both Early and High Gothic. John the Baptist, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Chartres is also a landmark for Chartres, France where it is located. Constructed between 1145 and 1250, Chartres Cathedral presents the same French gothic style as St. John the Baptist however on a much larger, more drastic scale. After burning down in 1194, Cathedral Chartres began reconstruction in French Gothic style which is over 700 years prior to the rebuilding of St. John in 1898 after receiving similar damage by fire. Chartres cathedral is also a notable sight because it is home to the Sancta Camisa which is believed to be the tunic that the Virgin Mary was wearing when she gave birth to Jesus
