The Romans overthrew their Etruscan kings in 509 BC, and they set up a new form of government for themselves. The Romans allowed a small number of Patrician families to fulfill the role of the government officials. The Patrician families were the wealthiest and the highest class in the Roman society. Then there were the Plebeians who were the so called working class and they made up the majority of the population at the time. So now the Romans were an Oligarchy which meant that the power was in the hand of the aristocrats. The laws back then were mostly spoken word and weren’t normally written down for everyone to see, so that's why the Twelve Tables were so important. There became many conflicts between the Patricians and the Plebeians because of the constant battle of the social classes. The Patricians had more power and rights than the Plebeians because of their wealth and social status. So that's why the Twelve Tables was created to ensure that equal rights were given to all studies. …show more content…
The people who wrote the Twelve Tables was thought to consist of ten to twelve men. The Tables were then later approved by the Centuriate Assembly. The Centuriate assembly was the Roman Army, and they were consulted on a majority of political matters. The Twelve Tables was well received among the Plebeians because they now had equal rights as the Patricians. However in the text it said the Plebeians “forced” the Patricians to create the Twelve Tables, so the Patricians were probably hesitant because they held all the political power. And this was also the first set of laws written down that the Romans had ever used, so it probably took time for them to adjust. The Twelve Tables also helped the Patricians not hold all the power in
Throughout time, it has been said that the Romans have made some major contributions when it came to Western civilization. A plethora of the contributions were in the categories of the law and engineering. In the law field, Romans left behind a great legacy for Western civilization, for instance one contribution being their Twelve Tables. The Twelve Tables established written rules of criminal and civil law. Not only with the Twelve Tables, but they developed the distinction between public law in which the state is concerned directly and private law which involves disputes between persons, the process of making laws has also had an influence on modern democratic political systems. During the Roman Republic, lawmaking was a bicameral activity and legislation was passed by an assembly of the citizens. It was then approved by the representatives of the upper class, or the senate, and issued in the name of the senate and the people of Rome. Many countries like the United States have adopted the republican Rome as a reproduction for their own governments.
The Roman Republic can be explained as the period from 509 – 27 BCE, which the ancient Roman civilization exemplified a republican form of government; where the supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives. During the Roman Republic, the 2 most powerful, and main branches of government included the Consuls and the Senate. It was the Consuls who held supreme civil and military control over Rome; however the republic had precautions in place to avoid one of the consuls from exercising too much power, such as short one year terms, veto and the notion of 2 consuls to divide authority. The republic then also included the senate; where at first, senators were only chosen from the patrician class, but in time, plebeians joined their positions (Bradley, 1990). Throughout the history of the republic, the evolution of government was driven by the struggle between the aristocracy and the ordinary citizens. The demise of the republic resulted through a series of civil wars and powerful dominance of significant historical figures (Princeton.edu, 2014).
The Romans have had almost every type of government there is. They've had a kingdom, a republic, a dictatorship, and an empire. Their democracy would be the basis for most modern democracies. The people have always been involved with and loved their government, no matter what kind it was. They loved being involved in the government, and making decisions concerning everyone. In general, the Romans were very power-hungry. This might be explained by the myth that they are descended from Romulus, who's father was Mars, the god of war. Their government loving tendencies have caused many, many civil wars. After type of government, the change has been made with a civil war. There have also been many civil wars between rulers. But it all boils
This new political ordering was the republic. The Greek historian Polybius defines the republic as having three basic parts. The consuls, who were elected by the people, also had to be approved by the senate. The senate, which was made up of patricians. Lastly, the people (roman citizens) who held the ultimate power, as they were the ones who voted. In this manner it was guaranteed that the government must always work in a symbiotic re...
After Rome established itself, they were determined to never again be ruled by a monarch. The Roman setup a new government called a republic. Romans thought a republic would keep any individuals from gaining too much power. Later Romans looked back with enormous pride on the achievements of the early republic. Between 509 B.C. and 133 B.C., Rome adapted the government to fit the need of the people it served. It also developed the military power to not only conqueror not only Italy, but also the entire Mediterranean world. In the early republic power was controlled by the patricians, the land holding upper class. Senators, who served for life, interpreted laws and issued decrees. In the event of a war the senate might elect a dictator who ruled for only six months in time of emergency.
Rome was changing. The people of Rome were changing. The citizens of Rome were getting tired of being ruled by others. They wanted to rule themselves. So after years of fighting against the last king of Rome, who was Tarquin the Proud, the people of Rome took over, and created a new form of government called a republic (Mr.Donn). In Rome’s republic, citizens of Rome would vote for their own leaders. Now, Rome was not ruled by heirs to the throne, but by the power of citizens that strove to become great leaders. From 509 to 82 BCE, the Republic of Rome thrived. In 451 BCE, ten men were chosen to write the first ten tables of the Twelve Tables after long opposition by the patricians to publicly educate people about the rights they had. One of these ten men was lucky enough to write the last two “tables” to make The Twelve Tables. Some of the rights included in The Twelve Tables were a person’s innocence until proven guilty and a person’s right to pay off debt. During this time, the Roman Republic annihilated Carthage and poured salt on their fields as Rome grew and became stronger. When 82 BCE came around, Cornelius Sulla, a conniving dictator took over Rome when he named...
One of the versions of governing is an oligarchy, a small group of people in control of a country. In book eight of the republic Plato explains the meaning of an oligarchy and when it is very unsuccessful. It doesn't work because whoever has the most wealth can take part in ruling over the city. Plato even explains "when virtue and riches are placed together in the scales of the balance, the one always rises as the other falls...
Roman law also defined the right to use a road as a claim across private land. The Twelve Tables thus set the direction and precedence of public domain that is defined in both the “right of going” and
The twelve tables are a document during 451 to 450 B.C. it was one of the earliest attempts of creating code of law so it’s basically the roman law each table is responsible for a section in the law for example table one is the law pertaining to procedure for the courts and trials this part in the document states that the prosecutor summons the defendant to court they have to attend what I took from this part of the roman law was that fair justice was a
The Roman Republic began approximately around 509 B.C. when the nobles drove the King and his family out of Rome. This monumental incident helped shape the start to the transformation of the monarchy into a republican governmental system. This is known to have begun by that of the Roman nobles trying to hold their power that they had gained. The Republic was “[a] city-state [which] was the foundation of Greek society in the Hellenic Age; in the Hellenistic Age, Greek cities became subordinate to kingdoms, larder political units ruled by autocratic monarchs” (Perry 105)
Rome's Republican era began after the overthrow of the last Roman King Tarquin Superbus by Lucius Brutus in 509 BC(1), the Senate was ruled the by the people of Rome. The Roman Republic was governed by a largely complex constitution, which established many checks and balances, so no man could have complete control. The evolution of the constitution was heavily influenced by the struggle between the patricians and the other prominent Romans who were not from the nobility. Early in Rome’s history, the patricians controlled the republic, over time, the laws that allowed these individuals to dominate the government were repealed, and the result was the emergence of a the republic which depended on the structure of society, rather than the law, to maintain its dominance. This is similar to the creation of the American system of government. Starting with the over throw of t...
Rome’s government was unfamiliar at that time in history, having a unified empire through one government. They used aristocratic, democratic, and monarchical elements to make their Empire thrive. Each one of these elements were in place to keep the others in balance. The Roman constitution was based upon checks and
The Roman Republic was founded in 509 BC after the ruling Tarquins abused their extensive power as monarchs and were overthrown. The goal of the Roman Republic was to have a strong government, governed equally by the patricians and the plebians, and to avoid another Roman Monarchy. For years Rome was guided by great men, such as Cincinnatus and Scipio Africanus, who led the Republic through hard times, conquering such enemies as the Etruscans and the Carthaginians. Large-scale war united Roman society in its common goals. However, after Scipio’s victory at Zama in 202 BC, a new Roman world began to take shape. Roman soldiers returned home from their victory to find that they could not pay for their farms, becoming “squatters” on their own lands after having to sell them to richer men. The Senate became corrupted, and despite the Gracchi brothers’ best efforts, the rich patricians soon monopolized nearly all aspects of the Republic, from trading and “farming” to governing the people. After marching on Rome, Sulla became dictator in 82 BC. After Sulla, the First Triumvirate: Pompey, Crassus, and Caesar, owned virtually all power in Rome, yet each had his own desire to defeat the other two and become Emperor. When Crassus died in battle, Caesar had his chance. He defeated Pompey and marched on Rome, victorious. After declaring himself Dictator for Life, Caesar was assassinated, and another Civ...
The Plebeians might have had a council in the Republic, but the Senate still ignored them, and persuaded the problem to there side most of the time. Some text evidence that supports this reason comes from a website called Patricians and Plebeians.com. From the paragraph from the site it stated, “The patricians excluded the plebeians from the consulship and the Senate.”(“Patricians and Plebeians.” Patricians and Plebeians - Ancient Rome, www.mrdowling.com/702-patricians.html.) This text evidence shows how the plebeians didn’t have a real say or decision in things even though they had a council who thought they were making decisions did have power, but not much. Some people may think differently than others, but that doesn’t show how they may be
The Roman laws are important to the ancient world and today. Many of these laws are still in use in the United States. I selected three of the laws that I think are still very important. I chose: 1) all free people have equal rights before the law, 2) judges must interpret the law and make a decision fairly, and 3) people have rights that no government can take away. These laws are still very important to us today. The next paragraphs will explain why the Roman laws are essential laws now and then.
