“Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror” (Eliot Spitzer). When Eliot Spitzer conceived those words, he was trying to explain that the weapon and the type of person behind the weapon’s actions are both important variables to the devastation that could come. People with mental illnesses, or a history of mental illnesses, should not be able to purchase and carry firearms. It would be a stress and danger to everyone. People with mental illnesses can be sensitive and unable to interpret things correctly. This could cause them to react harshly and irrationally, maybe even pull their weapon out on a civilian. On December 14, 2012, tragedy struck at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A 20-year-old man by the name of Adam Lanza walked into the school and shot and killed 20 children between the ages of six and seven years old. He also shot 6 adult teachers that were presently in the building, but only before turning the gun on himself. “Lanza struggled with mental illness, a history of obsessive-compulsive behaviors and a fascination with mass shootings - particularly the 1999 school shooting in Columbine” (US News). This, as it may be an example of the dangers that could come, is a tragedy that should never happen again. Imagine yourself as the mother or father of a six-year-old boy and one day you get a phone call. On the phone, you hear the principal of your son’s school saying that their has been an incident. In the background you can hear police sirens and you rush to the scene. You pull up to the school and see crowds of kids standing there and officers with their handguns out, all aimed at the building. You ask the principal where you son is and he replies to you in a grimm expression, clearly showing sympathy, “I’m so sorry, but..,” he hesitates, “your son was killed in the shooting.” Nobody should ever have to hear those words. This all happened because someone with a mental illness was able to carry a gun after purchasing it.
