When Eliot Spitzer conceived those words, he was trying to explain that the weapon and the type of person behind the weapon’s actions are both important variables to the devastation that could come. People with mental illnesses, or a history of mental illnesses, should not be able to purchase and carry firearms. It would be a stress and danger to everyone. People with mental illnesses can be sensitive and unable to interpret things correctly. This could cause them to react harshly and irrationally, maybe even pull their weapon out on a civilian. On December 14, 2012, tragedy struck at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. A 20-year-old man by the name of Adam Lanza walked into the school and shot and killed 20 children between the ages of six and seven years old. He also shot 6 adult teachers that were presently in the building, but only before turning the gun on himself. “Lanza struggled with mental illness, a history of obsessive-compulsive behaviors and a fascination with mass shootings - particularly the 1999 school shooting in Columbine” (US News). This, as it may be an example of the dangers that could come, is a tragedy that should never happen again. Imagine yourself as the mother or father of a six-year-old boy and one day you get a phone call. On the phone, you hear the principal of your son’s school saying that their has been an incident. In the background you can hear police sirens and you rush to the scene. You pull up to the school and see crowds of kids standing there and officers with their handguns out, all aimed at the building. You ask the principal where you son is and he replies to you in a grimm expression, clearly showing sympathy, “I’m so sorry, but..,” he hesitates, “your son was killed in the shooting.” Nobody should ever have to hear those words. “Guns don’t kill people, people do.” This is a well known statement that is oftentimes considered true. However, it is not completely true. Someone who is mentally ill may be unable to make logical decisions and the perception they receive of reality may be tainted by the illness. Gun laws pertaining to those suffering mental illnesses should be more restrictive. Weapons such as guns make committing an act of violence, especially when there are multiple victims, much easier. It is difficult to assess the probability of a person to commit a violent act that harms anyone including himself/herself. Therefore, gun laws need be monitored very closely and made more consistent throughout each state in order to prevent violence that could occur in the future. To make any system effective, every state must have the same laws and regulations, as it is easy for a person to travel to a state more lenient on gun control and purchase a gun from a store that will sell firearms more openly.

All of a sudden, he loads a pistol and aims it towards you. What are your options? Try to visualize, a guy going to see his wife and kids, but when out of nowhere a person pulls you aside and then points a pistol at you. Over the course of years, ninety-three United States citizens are killed with guns. Due to these reasons, it seems it is necessary to get rid of guns because of the 21,175 suicides, 505 deaths due to accidental/ negligent discharge of a firearm. It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.

There have been many horror stories in the news about mass shootings at schools. The public, and even the president of the United States, is asking if anything can be done to prevent these tragedies. There are many theories on why students kill their peers at schools; these range from increased violence in video games and movies to bullying troubles at school. Almost always, the perpetrator suffers from some form of mental illness (Khadaroo). Because of this, motives for these crimes are extremely difficult to discern. Although the theories for the causes of this dilemma are tenuous at best, the effects are very perceptible. Can anything be done to prevent these massacres? School shootings are a complex problem that cannot always be prevented, but there are a number of actions we can take to reduce the frequency and extent of the damage caused. These actions include placing more restrictions on firearms, creating detection programs for shooters, hiring more counselors for unstable students, and placing guards or police in schools. According to the final report by the states attorney’s office he got in the school at 9:30 AM in the morning and shot the principal and the school’s psychologist that went out to the hallway to check loud bangs they heard. He then moved on to class rooms where innocent children were learning and started shooting and by 9:40 AM, just ten minutes later, he took the lives of twenty six people, including twenty children age twelve and below and six adults, before taking his own life (State Report on Sandy Hook Elementary shooting).

There are people using guns for personal safety and there are others who use them for crimes, as well as for other situations. Firearm deaths in the United States have slowly been decreasing from year to year with all these bills getting passed to promote a safer country than ever before.
