In the United States there have been 142 school shootings since 2013. In Australia there has never been a school shooting. “A school shooting is a form of mass shooting involving a gun attack on an educational institution, such as a school or university”(Wikipedia). According to the United States Secret Service, a school shooting is where the school is purposely planned and selected as the location for the attack. A school shooting may occur between any individual, student, instructor, administrator and staff employed institution (Sinnamon, 2016). There is no one profile to describe a shooter but almost all attackers are students at the school. I am tired of living in total fear that my school, town, or any other public place will be the new breaking news of a shooting. No person right in the head will go around shooting up a school or anywhere else because they were angry at the people there. If we want to actually do something other than cry we need to know the first step in how these things happen. 1)person makes plan 2)person buys gun 3)peruses plan. We may no be able to stop a person thought process but we can sure as heck change how someone messed up enough to kill people to buy a gun. There is no reason for those type of people to be aloud to. This was a very informative article. I was unaware of all the deaths in result of gun violence. I didn’t realize that people who worked for the government or who was in congress were often targets. In order to fully get rid of gun violence in schools, each and every school should have metal detectors that can detect weapons and always have security guards on duty. By doing this, parents are more comfortable with sending their students off to school. Taking this step in every school around the world would definitely cost lots of money but it will honestly be worth it. As us Americans we are actually making the stereotype of we always carry guns around sound true to the rest of the world considering that, we are the “31% percent of all public mass shootings which at least four people are killed.” (TheWeek.com) But under a broader definition USA counted 346 mass shootings including shooting deaths of four or more victims in a 17- year period. The worst part about this information is this year we already have recorded 249 mass shootings in about 7 months close to the same amount USA counted over 17 years! Imagine that you are a student sitting in your classroom taking notes just like every normal day. Then before you know it things get crazy. There is word on the intercom that there is a threat with a gun. Before long you start to hear gunshots. Your teachers rush you into the corner, tell you to get under the desks, shut off the lights, and lock the door. As you lay under the desks you hear screams from the room across the hall. You think, “This is it.” Then the threat walks right by the door and moves on. You think, “That was close.” Later the police unlock the door as everyone thinks about what they just witnessed. This event is similar to what children at Sandy Hook Elementary School witnessed on the gloomy morning of December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut. The shooter Adam Lanza was “a 20 year old loner with a personality disorder and in critical need of mental health evaluation and psychiatric treatment” (Faria). This shooting was one of the most recent mass killings at an American school. A mass shooting to me, is defined as when a person intends to kill multiple innocent victims, because they want revenge or they want to prove a point. Based on the media, the law, childhood upbringing, and health status, society today contributes to the reason shootings occur.
Violence in schools is a huge problem. It is estimated that in the U.S. about 50 million students are enrolled ranging from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (Ten Hard Facts about School Violence). School is meant to be a safe haven for children to come and have the opportunity to learn. Violence can inhibit this learning and can even leave children scarred from their experience. School violence includes victimization, teacher injury, bullying, school fights, weapons, and student use of drugs and alcohol. The area is not limited to the campus and also includes walking to or from school or a school event (About School Violence).
