Throughout life, many people and events have a major impact on future decisions that will, hopefully, lead to great success. For myself, deciding on pursuing English Education changed my life for the better. All my life, I had always wanted to become a type of doctor, from pediatric oncologist to gynecologist. As I aged, however, I realized I was not the type of person who was ambivalent about working late and fickle hours my whole life, especially since I planned on having a family at some point. Once I had this realization there was some thinking I had to do in order to figure out what I was meant to become. Eventually, with the help of a teacher, I discovered the love I had for education. Kelly Vorhis. When someone talks about that teacher everyone wishes they had because of how amazing their classes are and because of how great of a person they are, that is Mrs. Vorhis. No matter what happened in class, she never treated anyone any differently than if the day were perfect in every aspect. She never gave up on any student and always tried to make her lessons fun, even the boring grammar ones. Also, whenever I just needed to talk to someone, she always made sure she was available for me. I pray to God that I will become the teacher she is once my schooling is complete because anything less and I will not be at my best. In the reading “Who Goes to College” written by Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes I was able to see myself in her situation. When she was a senior she had no idea what she was going to do her following year, all she knew was that her parents wanted her to attend college. She always wanted to work, she liked being able to provide for herself but her parents always told her that college would come first. Mrs. Plot, one of the hardest English teachers in Murray County High School, was my teacher that year. She was a very determined and driven teacher that did not tolerate her students to fail her class, even if they were lazy. I had heard horror stories from her former students, but she was nothing like they said she was. She was the only teacher that I have connected with all throughout school. I looked forward to her class every morning because she always made learning fun. Mrs. Plot gave out good advice about English, but she also gave me personal advice and was more of a friend to me. She always knew what to say to me when I had problems. She motivated me to do better with my writing; we went to a journalism class together every week that year. Mrs. Plot deepened my love for reading and writing. Without her, I would not be the kind of student I am today. On every assignment in her class, I got the most feedback and it helped me out a lot. Most individuals can recall when they were very young saying, “When I grow up, I want to be a . . . ” For some people, over the course of growing up their ambitions changed several times. But for many, they ended up in a career which was a life long desire, goal, or ambition. Today, students must begin to think about their future on a more serious note than that of childhood during the latter part of their middle school years. This is during their eighth grade year usually, which is a year or two younger now than just a few years past. But, the reason for this is still the same. This will enable students to gear their education in a route which will hopefully benefit them after high school graduation or in their future. For some, these choices and decisions will never change. But for others, for various reasons, they may decide on a career change somewhere down the road or during the course of their life. As for myself, I definitely fall into the latter of the two mentioned. After working for years in the field of business (my first degree), I felt a desire and need for a career change. I wanted a more rewarding career. Personally I feel doctors and teachers have the most rewarding careers of any profession. Therefore, teaching became my goal and ambition for my career. Unlike most individuals, I was able to obtain first hand insight into my choice before returning to college to further my education in this area by substitute teaching on a permit for three years (based on my Bachelor of Science degree and six hours of graduate studies). Countless hours of planning and considerations preceded this. My mom is an artist by career, and as such, she always pushed me to pursue whatever makes me happy. She never wanted me to settle for a monotonous job where the pay is good, but I am explicitly miserable. After graduation, I spent a year trying to find out what “whatever makes you happy” really meant. I interviewed doctors, psychologists, biotechnology workers, neuroscientist, addiction counselors, and nothing met the reward and fulfillment as the field of education.
Seldom in our lives do we encounter an individual or two that impacts our lives in ways that stretch far beyond what we conceived possible. Throughout my life, however, I’ve been incredibly lucky enough to encounter not one, two, or even three, but a handful of these extraordinary individuals. These people have not only ingrained themselves within my memory, but have also helped to shape the type of person that I would like to be in my life. Often times, accomplished careers are guided by the wisdom and generosity of these selfless individuals, known to most of the world as teachers. For me, my high school AP literature teacher is one of these very distinct and memorable teachers who has had an overwhelmingly positive effect on my life since the day I met her. But what made her the teacher she was to me? Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs the modern world has to offer. Not only does it demand long hours and intense planning, but boasts a need for extensive knowledge of specific subjects, syllabi, and standards. It necessitates passion, kindness - a yearn to learn and a general knowledge of discipline and management. Teaching derives itself off of a drive to make a difference in the lives of young people, a desire to educate and prepare the leaders of the future, today, in hopes for a better tomorrow. In my mind there is no better personification of these traits than this wonderful woman.

It will be such an amazing experience to go daily to a place of work and feel as though I truly belong. Many people do not realize that if it weren’t for teachers, we would not have doctors, lawyers, and many other professions that greatly depend on the guidance of their teachers to enrich their lives. At each point in my life, I had fabulous teachers that helped open my mind to the bigger world outside. But the person who taught me the most was my mother.
In my life, my favorite teachers were always the ones who taught lessons inside and outside the classroom. They taught us about our past, our language and the world around us for tests and quizzes while also teaching us how to navigate through life with their lessons that weren’t needed for our grades. For me, I wanted to be that kind of person. I knew I wanted to help others when they needed help, and I knew I wanted to do that as a teacher.
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
After three years of resistance, my passion for learning and literature and my experiences as a student finally defeated my sensible plan. I decided it was not too late. I would become a teacher - truth be told, I already was.
Ivey; ninth grade Speech teacher, Mrs. Boone; and my eleventh and twelfth grade English teacher and mentor, Mrs. Barbosa. It is impossible for me to pick a favorite because each one has helped me in more ways than one in my time of need. I had two major fears entering high school: 1) I wouldn 't be able to handle the work and 2) I would have a hard time coming out of my shell. Three years later my ninth grade teachers are still helping me. Over the years Mrs. Ivey took the time out of her day to make sure that I was ready for any challenge that I had to face. She taught me how to be a better student which will continue to stay with me after I graduate. Mrs. Boone helped me to overcome my second fear of coming out of my shell. Her class was based on talking to strangers so I quickly had to swallow my butterflies and open my mouth. Mrs. Boone not only taught me that I can determine my out future but she also taught me that it was all right to be myself. To described all that Mrs. Barbosa has done to help me would far exceed my eight hundred word limit. She has not only added to Mrs. Ivey teachings of how to be a successful student but she has served as a role model of what I hope to have in the future. She 's achieved so much while still being humble and helpful towards anyone who needs help. She 's given me countless hours of her patience, time, and help to support me in my
The teacher that stands out most in my head is my eleventh grade English teacher. She had a liberal arts background, and enjoyed the classic American writers; Hemingway, Steinbeck, what have you. She was in the class of teachers who was more impressed by actions and honesty than suck-ups and homebodies. She was the kind of teacher who was proud when you informed her that you had skipped her class to go fishing at the river and play bluegrass music with your buddies. She was the kind of teacher who preferred that her students wrote what they truly felt, and not what they truly felt she would like to hear. She was in the rare class of teachers who tried to prepare her students for life after school, not life for school. She was a part of a small class of note-worthy teachers.
