Cheerleading to me isnt just a sport its my team ,my family, and my life I could bring spirit and love to this team along with the skills I already have. And yes others can bring love and skills to this team as well but i genuinely love the sport and it definitely shows when i'm out there. I think I deserve to be on this team,because i'm a hardworking very positive and outgoing person ,I help people when they're down and cheer them on at there best moments. In middle school i had cheered in the seventh grade but didn't make it for my eight and i wasn't able sign up for my ninth because my family was moving and we moved over the summer in august so all the tryouts we over with . So i decided to focus on my school work AS A Freshman I'm doing
Cheerleading is fun! Of course we cheerlead because it’s fun! From cheer camp to laughing on the sidelines, cheerleading is always a good time, especially with your friends. The memories made my cheerleaders whether they be from practices, games, or spirit activities (like decorating for senior night or baking treats for football players) are memories that will be cherished for a cheerleaders lifetime. Cheering is such a positive and happy experience because we are always doing something fun or accomplishing something new, like learning our new pyramid or mastering our routine. I get to get dressed up in my uniform with my bow in my hair and my white, red-track stained cheer shoes and not only cheer on my favorite football team but run around and cheer and stunt with a team of fun-loving girls and bring my community
I know that cheerleading is a sport. Have you ever got asked if you think that cheerleading is a sport or not. That is what I am going to tell you today. Cheerleading is just like football and basketball it is a game where you compete and get points. But with cheerleading it is not about throwing the ball accost a field or making a basket. It is about how well it is performed. To do good they have to prates a lot and they also have to have a lot of upper body mussel.
Have you ever just thought and engaged on curiosity on how it feels like to stand and balance on hands of people? Being thrown high in the air with just trusting three people to catch you? Lifting people together while exhibiting strength and trusting that the stunt won’t completely fall? Lastly, having the guts to cheer, shout and to put on that cheerful smile despite all the pain and sacrifices you made just to complete the routine? These people are extraordinary athletes. These athletes just don’t perform difficult stunts but they also uniquely combine the factor of performing and getting the crowd’s attention through their routine. They are called Cheerleaders. Most of the people who aren’t familiar of the content of the sport would think that Cheerleading is just for the purpose of performing and cheering for their own team or school, but to Cheerleaders, it’s more than just those conditions. It’s just something more special than that. It’s a vision and of course, pure passion.
That was my favorite part of cheerleading because a bunch of squads from different schools come to compete against each other to see who’s the best. We would put up flyers around the school so people might come to watch us but they never did and some were even taken down. Now as far as our cheer squad went, we weren’t that good still because we had an inexperienced coach who did not know how to choreograph dances or cheers. So we continued to be made fun of and not taken seriously by our classmates, which was extremely annoying because we just wanted some respect for the work that we put it. The New York Times states that cheerleading is the fastest growing girls’ sport, yet more than half of Americans do not believe it is a sport. A sport is defined as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (dictionary.com). Cheerleading at a competitive level is physically demanding and requires team work to be the best. The misconception of cheerleaders being weak, nonathletic crowd entertainers makes people believe cheerleaders are not athletes and that cheerleading is just a hobby but cheerleaders that compete at a competitive level are in fact athletes because it meets the standards of what a sport is, which includes rules and regulations, and overcoming air resistance.
In order to be successful cheerleading takes dedication and hard work, we can still have fun, but you need to be focused when the time calls. Of course competitive cheerleading is a sweaty, fun, and overwhelming at times, but aren’t all sports? To think that one thing that changes a team 's overall score for deciding either first or last between the two teams would be hard work and dedication to win the competition. Just like in football, they get that one chance to make a difference and win within a split second do they run or throw. Well does the cheerleader try to save the stunt or is it not worth it. Football players get that one chance to win and cheerleaders get that one chance to make a good impression on the judges. Cheerleaders put in the hard work and dedication through practices like football players. Then the practice football on average 150 days per year, cheerleaders on average practice 226 days a year. Cheerleaders are dedicated, they’ll go through anything to win like Bangaoil. Every minute of the day we are doing something, whether we recognize it or not. How we spend our time can determine where we go. If I waste my time I will look back and wonder where it all went. Through all the practices, games, and extra events, it seems I am wasting my valuable time on something not worthy of my time or making a bad investment of my time. If you asked me if cheerleading was my life my answer would be no, but I spend a lot of time going to practices, games, and events that it is difficult to believe otherwise. Many people, including my sister, would say I should be spending my time doing something more productive than wearing short skirts and throwing girls in the air. However, I believe that I continue to cheer because it is worthwhile in my life.
When I first started cheering, I decided to participate because of two reasons: my mom forced me and my older sister, who I modeled after, cheered. As I got older and began to think for myself, I had engaged in cheer for so long that it became a habit. If my mom did not demand that I partake in cheer, I would not have been able to go through situations that sparked personal growth and knowledge. Traditionally, cheerleaders have not always competed, and many people do not consider routines to be a “sport” like basketball or football. Mariah Burton Nelson, author of “The Stronger Women Get, The More Men Love Football: Sexism and the American Culture of Sports.” believes that cheerleading should not be considered a sport. Many people fail to realize that cheerleaders do much more than just cheer on the sidelines. Many high school and college cheerleaders compete in addition to sideline cheering. The article “Is Cheerleading a Sport?” states “Unlike traditional cheerleading, competitive cheerleading featured acrobatic stunts that often required intense practice and considerable athletic ability. Furthermore, competitive cheering teams did not simply ‘root’ for football and basketball teams, but rather battled other cheer teams in national tournaments.” (Is Cheerleading a Sport? par. 4) As a former competitive cheerleader, I have experienced first hand just how hard competitive cheering can be. I originally felt that cheering was just a way for me to enjoy myself. It wasn’t long until I realized that cheerleading meant much more to me. According to Webster’s Dictionary for Students, “cheer” is defined as “to urge on especially with shouts or cheers” (71).
