Athletics, no matter how competitive, teach athletes countless lessons. Involvement in athletics teaches athletes to be dedicated, persevere, how to manage time, and the best and most important lesson of all: how to be an exceptional teammate. The camaraderie on teams makes for long lasting bonds and lifetime friendships. My career on the high school swim team has given me just that. There is one person in particular who has made my swim experience one I will always remember, and I cannot thank swimming enough for bringing me one of my best friends. I arrived at the high school on a warm sunny day in the middle of summer for my first day of high school swimming. Being a tiny seventh grader, I walked in with butterflies in my stomach. I didn’t know what to expect on my first day, and the thought of swimming with incredibly fast high school students elevated my fear. I walked briskly to the locker room and changed into my swimsuit. It made me feel better knowing we were both in the same situation. We sat next to each other while our coach talked to the team about the expectations and general information of the season. When it was time to get in the water, Lindsey and I swam in the same lane. As we kicked together during warm up, we continued to get to know one another better. By the end of practice, we had become very comfortable with one another. We had struggled through the first day together, and we both realized our fears of being the slowest ones on the team and not being able to keep up with the high school students were irrational. Lindsey made my first day of practice more comfortable, and we instantly became friends.
