What type of sport delivers an extremely hard workout yet still teaches good life skills and provides good friends? Swimming can supply all of those and more. Working out can help provide a healthy lifestyle. Having skills and friends that can help in life is also important because they can be beneficial later in life. I have participated on swim team for ten years and through all that time I have met many people. Those people that I met I consider the best friends that I have ever made. Life skills that swimmers learn can include many things, but learning how to swim and take instructions remain the most important out of all of them. About ten years ago my family had taken a vacation. While we stayed at the hotel, we had jumped into the pool with my five-year-old cousin. We played for an hour or so and most of us had climbed out, but my older sister Savanna had just so happened to glance at the covered balcony to see people pointing back into the pool. She turned around and sure enough our little cousin had drifted off to where she slowly struggled to return to the surface of the water. Savanna quickly dove into the pool and dragged her back to safety. Because Savanna knew how to swim from doing swim team she saved a life that day. Another important life quality is the ability to listen to instructions. On my swim team when kids misbehaved or did not listen, they would either have to hop out of the pool and sit on the deck until they fixed their attitude or do extra sets. Knowing the consequences of misbehaving helped us listen better during swim practice which in turn helped us listen to other people who supervised us. Swimming remains a great way to exercise because it can workout the legs, core, and so much more. Swimming is often referred to as an individual sport. In competition you are given a lane, a heat, and you compete for your time. Answer one question then, to prove its nature of individuality, at the seven hundred meter mark of the gruesome fifteen hundred, when the lactic acid has built up, and your body feels like failing, what pushes you beyond a point you have never reached before? The drowned out sounds of a team cheering, or seeing a friend charge through crowds flailing their arms through the air, is all I need to keep going and represent my team in a race to the finish. In addition to cheering during races, it is important to have the encouragement of your teammates all the time at practice, at school and, even in more personal matters. A team gives you a sense of belonging or a sense of discouragement that keeps you from your true potential. A community of a team extends much past the athletes, to the parents, as well. A team in which everyone is recognized for what they do/ can do compared to a special “elite” group of swimmers leads to a new level of pride and confidence for the younger athletes. Lastly, the philosophy of the coach is a critical component to the success of an athlete. One may believe in narrowing in on the naturally talented and the other coach strives to train each individual to maximum potential. Being involved in all activities that I have been in, I have got to meet many people. Some of my earliest of my friends that I met through gymnastics are still my good friends. I also have former teammates that are from neighboring towns that I still keep in contact with. Sports give you the opportunity to be introduced to so many different types of people. Being apart of a team gives you and your fellow teammates a special bond. I know I can always count on them to have my back and cheer me on, whether I am having a great day or a terrible day.
