According to Oxford dictionary, diversity is referred to as the state of showing a great deal of variety. In this case, diversity is defined as cultural diversity in a society or a specific region. Wikipedia states that “The phrase cultural diversity can also refer to having different cultures respect each other's differences.” Malaysia proves this statement as the three main ethnics are able to live together in harmony since Malaya’s Independence Day in 1957, although there were numerous obstacles along the way, threatening to topple the very foundation of the cooperation that exists among Malay, Chinese and Indian folk. Although we are all different in religion and race, unity is crucial if we are to work as a single organism to prop up the country’s name on the international stage. So, exactly why is diversity within society so important? Firstly, to put it simply, our lives are just more interesting! Can you imagine living in a country where every person you see has the same language, accents and religion? Eventually, we would all get bored, desperate for some new and interesting faces. Curiosity is a difficult flame to extinguish. For example, when a Buddhist asks why his Muslim friend doesn’t eat during the day, he would explain the concept of fasting in the month of Ramadan. From this, many beneficial moral values can be obtained by enquiring others on their way of life. Therefore, the Buddhist friend will develop respect towards him, by not eating in front of his fasting friend. Besides that, our cultural-based knowledge would increase, as would our level of wisdom. We are more equipped to face the outside world where religions and cultures come in abundance. Curiosity, respect, tolerance, teamwork, and understanding are what built the foundation harmony.
