Title Spoken by many people ¨not everything is black and white¨. We can live up to high standards, but everyone makes mistakes every once in awhile. As stated in Merriam Webster to be unethical is morally wrong and uncomforting. Also exclaimed in Merriam Webster to be immoral is to conflict with generally and traditionally help moral principles. It is at times acceptable to be immoral or unethical because it allows us to learn and grow through challenges, no one is perfect, and there are frequently consequences for your actions. Primarily, accepting that everyone can be unethical and immoral at times, it continually allows us to learn and grow from our decisions. There is not a guarantee that ethics are good, but there is a great probability that it is beneficial to be amoral.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s essay, A Letter from Birmingham Jail he compares the issues of Moral acts verses Immoral acts. This essay was written in response to a letter some clergymen had written after a direct action march Dr. King had participated in. In their letter the clergymen had praised the local police officers and media for the nonviolent and calm manner in which the situation was handled. It was this praise that prompted Dr King to write:

My double standard is excusing myself from following the rules, as I judge others by their adherence to my own principles. When tempted to be unethical, I will provide excuses to justify not following my own values. I will try to convince myself that the rules need to be followed by others, or that my actions meet my values, even though my ethical judgment says they do not.

When asked what is the definition of ethics, many responded that being moral meant doing the right thing. But how can we justify what is a good action and what is a bad action? All humans were created equal, but our principles, and ways of thinking can be extremely different. Some may say doing the right thing means following your heart, your inner feelings and intuition. But emotions can be misleading. Others say in order to do what is the morally right thing means to follow the law and do what is right by society, to be accepted. But today’s society is judgmental and can be corrupted with numerous opinions due to the diversity of cultures. So what does it mean to be ethical? Being ethical means doing what is right in terms of virtues, fairness, duties, responsibilities, obligations, and moral believes all which derived from cultures and family backgrounds.
Cheating is against the rules of all corporations, institutions, and life. It is not viewed as morally correct because as one cheats, one is taking the easy way out and disrespecting those who work hard for the same outcome, therefore breaking binding contract of respecting others around you. It is tempting though, as we know the outcome if we are not caught, and it is mostly one of achievement. Immanuel Kant believed that “an action is moral when it is done out of duty, rather than out of consequences.” If we were to decide our actions based on what will happen by us doing them, then we wouldn’t be acting in a moral way because we would always be choosing the actions that would benefit us each time. We would never help others if it would not benefit us in return and, we would be willing to harm others if in the end, we would get a beneficial outcome. What guides our actions is our maxim, or what drives us to choose to do something. But, Kant says that this action is not morally correct if our maxim is not a universal law, or can be adopted by everybody around us. Using Kant’s analytical terms and tactics to define a moral action, I will explain that cheating in an exam is in no way a morally correct action and therefore in order to act in a morally correct way, I should not cheat.
Is it okay to do wrong, even if the expectation is right? So many ways to ask this question, but is there really a right or wrong answer. It takes courage to reflect and think before doing something right or doing it wrong even if you know what is right. Ethics are consisted of a behavior that has been learned by an induvial or has been taught to them. People’s morals may give an ardor feeling, where they are seen as a person with no ethic character, or a person who shows there character to be perceived as someone with an ethical background.
Business ethics are moral principles that govern the work environment. According to the book business Law, “Ethics provides values beyond what the law requires or prohibits.”(20) It is “the commitment to what is right and a rejection of what is wrong.”(20) In other words, an ethical conduct is one that is in accordance with the social rules. It is not because something is unethical that it is unlawful. In the Toyota case, even though Toyota acts were unethical, they were not against the law.
