In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson bought 827,000 acres of land for 15 millions dollars. This acquisition, which gave the U.S many of its modern day middle states, is known as the Louisiana Purchase. This was the beginning of westward expansion. Then, in 1804, Jefferson commissioned Captain Meriwether Lewis with putting together a team with a purpose of exploring the newly bought land. They did a full “tour” of the land, creating maps, and documenting the flora and fauna. The U.S finally had some knowledge of this new, strange land. The only problem was the Native American's.
