In Northern Uganda there is war, killings, rebels, military, but along with that is happiness, passion, and dancing. The movie War Dance takes place in 2005 in a little village called Patongo in Northern Uganda. This village is under 24/hr. military protection from the rebels. The rebels are after anybody that they can get their hands on but mostly children. Patongo village is mainly orphans due to the rebels tearing families apart. The movie follows three children that have been through a lot in the short life. Dominic a rebel camp escapee, Nancy who is trying to help her siblings stay strong and Rose who witnessed the killings of her parents and trying to stay strong. The narration by the kids telling their stories of how their parents got killed or abducted gives you a personal connection to them. You feel the pain that they are going through and at the same time see the strength in their eyes as they are able to move on and do bigger and better things. I thought the way the music and cinematography that was put together capture what the village had to offer and the ways that they lived. The flashback while kids were speaking of their tragic events in the past gave you the feeling that you were their watching it happen. The movie made you think and imagine what it would be like to see your parents get killed, family getting abducted, and to even have to kill someone at a young age as Dominic had to. Dominic recalled a memory when he and some others where surrounded by the rebels in the bush. The rebels forced Dominic and to kill innocent people with their own hoes. He knew that if he didn’t kill them the rebels would have killed him. Through dancing he is able to forget about those bad memoires that he has in his mind. War Dance wanted to hit important criteria in a film so that they could portray the events that these kids go through. Most people wouldn’t think that events like this would be happening if they weren’t showed to them. That’s what War Dance had to do was show the message that they village of Patongo is trying to
There is a general discord among stakeholders on the definition of irregular warfare and where the term and concept fits within the joint and the individual services’ doctrine. The 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review report uses the term “irregular” only once in its one hundred and five pages and only in terms of a focus on building the joint force’s capability and capacity to deal with irregular warfare while maintaining a clear conventional and nuclear global superiority. Currently, the definition is ambiguous and results in conflict or duplication of efforts across Department of Defense stakeholders. For the purposes of this paper, the stakeholders discussed are the Army and the Marine Corps. Stakeholders must reach a consensus and clearly define irregular warfare in order to establish comprehensive irregular war policy and strategy.
On September 2nd, I experienced one of the most enjoyable folk dances, known as contra dance, at the First Baptist Church. Due to my cultural and religious background, this experience was new to me and full of mystery. However, it led me to wonder how social music, especially contra dance, is powerful enough letting strangers dance and communicate with each other in a perfect harmony.
It is said that ancient times were simpler than the present day. Life was simply about surviving. But of course, change is inevitable. Humans constantly feel the need to expand grounds or to go where conditions are best suited for them. Eventually, a tribe or race would have met another on their own. But what was life like before the different tribes and races met? In present day research, it is seen that though there was no contact whatsoever, separated ancient tribes and/or races were deemed similar. Somehow, human minds branch off into different views of the same topic, depending on where the people are located. Child soldier is a worldwide issue, but it became most critical in the Africa. Child soldiers are any children under the age of 18 who are recruited by some rebel groups and used as fighters, cooks, messengers, human shields and suicide bombers, some of them even under the aged 10 when they are forced to serve. Physically vulnerable and easily intimidated, children typically make obedient soldiers. Most of them are abducted or recruited by force, and often compelled to follow orders under threat of death. As society breaks down during conflict, leaving children no access to school, driving them from their homes, or separating them from family members, many children feel that rebel groups become their best chance for survival. Others seek escape from poverty or join military forces to avenge family members who have been killed by the war. Sometimes they even forced to commit atrocities against their own family (britjob p 4 ). The horrible and tragic fate of many unfortunate children is set on path of war murders and suffering, more nations should help to prevent these tragedies and to help stop the suffering of these poor, unfortunate an innocent children.
In the heart of Miami, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) dance majors put on a performance called The Art of Dance. Under the direction of Michelle Grant- Murray, guest choreographers challenged the students of MDC. The students were also able to exhibit their own work, as this was also their student choreography showcase. The evening consisted of diverse styles such as – African, contemporary, and world dance; unfortunately, I cannot say the all of the pieces impressed me.
As the name suggests, Irish dancing originated in Ireland and is a set of traditional dances. Ireland has been home to many different cultures over a long period time, and each of these have influenced the Irish dancing we see today. Originally, Druids used to dance in their religious rituals and the Celts then arrived, bringing their own folk dances. During the late 12th century, Ireland was invaded by the Normans (of Normandy, France but with Norse origins) who again brought to Ireland their own folk dances and music which they performed in the towns they conquered. By the 16th century Irish dances were commonly performed for arriving royalty and as entertainment, particularly a dance called the Hey which is similar to the reel we see today.
The topic I decided to choose to conduct my Capstone Research on is Copyright in Choreographic Works. Choreography is “Choreographers use dance performances to express ideas and stories. There are many types of dance, such as ballet, tango, modern dance, tap, and jazz (bls.gov). Choreography is also something that should be made from the heart, it’s not something that should be taken from someone else because at that point, it wouldn’t be considered your choreography and it wouldn’t be something you made from your own mind and creativity. Dancing is something you have a passion for and you show your emotions through your movements, so there shouldn’t be a need to copy. The problem now is, many choreographers are starting to steal choreography
Despite the fact that ballet is a completely new challenge for me, I managed to learn the choreographies and movements. From the videotaped performance I was able to identify the dance technique aspects that need to be improved for further correction. Although several elements, such as turns, port de bras, spatial awareness, movement quality and dynamic range require work; there are also aspects that were improved through practice.
Belly dancing is thought to date back into the third millennium BCE in the Middle East, with evidence of solo improvised dance seen in Egyptian paintings, figurines, and tombs (Shay & Sellers-Young, 2005: 3). There are now several different versions of this dance in the Middle East, for example, the shikhat in Morocco, the ciftetelli in Turkey, and the raqs sharqi in Egypt (Shay & Sellers-Young, 2005: 2). While these dances are similar in movements, the dance’s meanings differ in each culture. Here in the United States, we adopted and renamed belly dance in the late 1890’s from the Middle East, but based our understandings of the dance off of mistaken notions we assumed to be true in those countries. The meanings of belly dance in the United States have been shaped by orientalist views, and therefore are misrepresentative of the true connotations. Several contradictions exist between what Americans see belly dance as and what is actually true in the Middle Eastern culture, such as the implications of the dance, the dress and context of the dance, who actually dances, and spiritual significance.
There are different ways how to transmit a message and awake emotions in the audience. Dance, it’s the powerful tool that can evoke excitement, sadness, happiness, comedy and love, all at once. At the Young Choreographer showcase, there were spectacular presentations, but the ones that captured my full attention and admiration were the following performances: Irregardless, Danza Del Fuego and Echos. They had a mixture of rhythms and a wide variety of movements. The emotional significance and technique of the dances will be analyzed in order to understand the massive importance of the origin, motivation and message the dance offered.
War has been a prominent phenomenon that can be seen throughout the history of mankind, and it has been used as a tool by people in order to fulfil their needs. It is influential in reaching a peaceful resolution, and it acts as a refresher because without it society would be in chaos. War has allowed great empires, like the Napoleon Empire, to flourish and prosper, and has caused great empires, like the Roman Empire, to fall. War is needed in order to maintain a healthy and stable society. It is beneficial to the strength and socialization of a society, the health of its people, the productivity of the economy, and it can be used to force social changes and call for justice.
A question that has pondered for a myriad of years: how does one develop the vision of choreography in the mind and transfer it to human bodies? Choreographers try to explain this question through the pieces that they develop over the years. Their pieces “must be part of an organic whole, supporting the story, characters, and the overall artistic intent” (AACT). The Encyclopedia of Britannica defines choreography as “an art of creating and arranging dances”. The word is derived from the Greek words to “dance” and “write”. Modern day choreographers were asked to define the choreography in one word like the ancient Greeks derived it from. The words that they described choreography as were: art, movement, creativity, planning, and expressions
When I think of the performing arts, I think of plays. The combination of the live performance and the acting of the script, that’s what makes it a Performing art, right? Yes, but what I did not know is that Dance is also a performing art. Magic, music, even movies are examples of the Performing Arts. When asking the question, I found myself learning about examples and different types of the arts rather than what the definition of what a performing art is. The variety of genres under Performing arts are constituted by the abstract qualities that make up a performing art. To put it simply, the performing arts include a kind of performance. The Performing arts are a combination of both Visual Arts and Literary arts, due to how they are used in
“Dance, the art of precise, expressive, and graceful human movement, traditionally, but not necessarily, performed in accord with musical accompaniment. Dancing developed as a natural expression of united feeling and action.”
On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
