Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the greatest dutch painters after Rembrandt. Even though he remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life, just one of his paintings today in auction(the famous Starry Night) is worth over 80 million dollars in auction. In just over a decade Vincent created approximately 2100 paintings, including 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. All of his paintings consist of highly expressive and dramatic brush work which contributed to the inspiration of modern art today. Claude Monet played an essential role in a development of Impressionism. He created many paintings by capturing powerful art from the world around him. He was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France. Later, his family moved to Le Havre, Normandy, France because of his father’s business. Claude Monet did drawings of the nature of Normandy and time spent along the beaches and noticing the nature. As a child, his father had always wanted him to go into the family grocery business, but he was interested in becoming an artist. He was known by people for his charcoal caricatures, this way he made money by selling them by the age of 15. Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands on March 30, 1853. He was born into a middle class family that sometimes struggled financially. His grandfather was a famous preacher and his father was a minister so religion was pretty important within his family. The other passion within the family was art. His mother was an artist and three of his uncles and later his brother were art dealers. He got his first job at age 15, at his uncle’s art dealership. The fact that Vincent’s family was struggling at this time gave him the responsibility to leave school and go to work. Despite his family 's misfortune, van Gogh was fluent in 4 languages and his concern with art and religion kept growing. At the age of 20, he was transferred to the Goupil Gallery in London. It was there that he fell in love with art and English culture. He visited galleries in his spare time and in many aspects increased his understanding as a whole. In this period of time he started to fall in love with a woman named Eugenie Loyer. Vincent was prepared to ask her to marry him, but Eugenie didn’t feel the same as he did so she rejected the proposal and this caused van Gogh to suffer a mental breakdown. In this time he turned to God and threw away all unnecessary possessions except for the bible. He was fired from the Gallery for telling the customers “not to buy the worthless art.” Vincent then started teaching at a Methodist school and preached on the side a little. This was the first time in his life where he started to contemplate becoming a minister. Vincent was an influential post-Impressionist painter born in 1853, Netherlands. With Theo van Gogh’s association, Vincent met reputable Impressionist painters such as Émile Henri Bernard and Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin. Impressionism served as a platform for Vincent in developing his own style . He explored with colours, a stark contrast from his usual dark and sombre style. The influence of Japonisme charmed Vincent into residing in Arles where he began painting landscapes. Thereafter, Vincent voluntarily checked into Saint-Rémy sanatorium where his works reflected strong colours and lights of the countryside around him. His manic depression and epileptic condition, led to his suicide on July 27th 1890.

The eyes serve a much higher purpose than to view an object, the absorptions of electromagnetic waves allows for one to endeavor on a journey and enter a world of no limitation. During the 15th century, specifically the Early Renaissance, Flemish altarpieces swept Europe with their strong attention to details. Works of altarpieces were able to encompass significant details that the audience may typically only pay a cursory glance. The size of altarpieces was its most obvious feat but also its most important. Artists, such as Jan van Eyck, Melchior Broederlam, and Robert Campin, contributed to the vast growth of the Early Renaissance by enhancing visual effects with the use of pious symbols. Jan van Eyck embodied the “rebirth” later labeled as the Renaissance by employing his method of oils at such a level that he was once credited for being the inventor of oil painting. Although van Eyck, Broederlam, and Campin each contributed to the rise of the Early Renaissance, van Eyck’s altarpiece Adoration of the Mystic Lamb epitomized the artworks produced during this time period by vividly incorporating symbols to reconstruct the teachings of Christianity.
In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700’s and the early 1900’s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.

I chose him because he took the Rococo style and extended it past furniture, architecture, and sculpture, and into paintings. He was known for being one of the best draftsman along with his unique grand themes. During this time the style of the expressional night painting was so new it was looked down upon in its time as a childish piece while every ones almost pictures have portraits of landscape where the big hits. Oscar Claude Monet, better known as Claude Monet, was a founder of French Impressionist painting. He was born on November 14, 1840 as the second son of second-generation Parisians, Claude-Adolphe (a grocery man) and Louise-Justine Aubree Monet (a singer). Monet’s father wanted him to continue the family grocery store business, but Monet wanted to become an artist instead. In 1845 Monet and his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy. It was here that Monet met fellow artist Eugene Boudin who became his mentor. Eugene taught him to use oil paint and he introduced him to plein air painting (painting outdoors).
But, when they were made no one gave them any recognition until time had passed for the artist. Pollack painting got famous a year later from his painting review when a life magazine article featured Pollock. His arms crossed and had a cigarette dangling from his lips, standing in front of one of his swirled, caffeinated images. What was written the caption of the photograph asked, “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?” A powerful art critic named Clement Greenberg insistence that Pollock’s work represented a new, authentic American art. After that Pollock’s success was achieved over a period of years of making gesture, line, texture, and composition the very subject of his canvases. Van Gogh didn’t receive any recognition from his art-work on “The Starry Night,” or any of his piece of art until after his death. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25th 1881 and died. Picasso was many things- Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer poet, and playwright. He is one of the greatest influential artists of the 20th century and is also one of the creators of Cubism. In his early years, Picasso was an extraordinary artist. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, he painted in a naturalistic manner. As he grew so did his work, he started experimenting with different theories, techniques and ideas. His work is categorized into different periods such as the Blue Period (1901-1904), the Rose Period (1904-1906), African-influenced Period (1907-1909), Cubisu(1909-1912), and synthetic Cubism/Crystal period (1912-1919).
Since the dawn of time humans have always found a way of artistic expression. Whether it be cave paintings on the stone walls of their ancient dwellings; or some neanderthal drawing a stick figure on a leaf with their own feces. Artistic expression has always found a way to the surface throughout the history of men. It is because of this that certain figures exist, such as Picasso or Van Gogh.
