There most well-known paintings are called “Number 1” and “The Starry Night”. The paintings give off emotion by how they look, but each one is painted in different ways. The public did not find their paintings wanting when they were made. The difference was how long it took for them to get recognized for their work. Lastly, the paintings gave different and similar reactions to people that have changed over the years of their existence.
Both paintings give off emotion that look similar in some areas, such as the dark-ton that covers both. The “Number 1” painting has an intense dark area that is

But, when they were made no one gave them any recognition until time had passed for the artist. Pollack painting got famous a year later from his painting review when a life magazine article featured Pollock. His arms crossed and had a cigarette dangling from his lips, standing in front of one of his swirled, caffeinated images. What was written the caption of the photograph asked, “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?” A powerful art critic named Clement Greenberg insistence that Pollock’s work represented a new, authentic American art. After that Pollock’s success was achieved over a period of years of making gesture, line, texture, and composition the very subject of his canvases. Van Gogh didn’t receive any recognition from his art-work on “The Starry Night,” or any of his piece of art until after his death. After many years later painters where moved by Van Gogh’s paintings in both heart and soul. Now it can’t be said that “The Starry Night” was worth as much as the rest of his paintings, but it has been known that his paintings are worth around 80 million
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
are depicted with the same degree of variation. To understand such a diverse set of paintings –
Coming from a family greatly involved in art dealing, Vincent van Gogh was destined to have a place in the world of art. Van Gogh’s unique techniques and use of color, which clashed and differed greatly from the masters of the art world of his time, would eventually gain him the recognition as one of the founders of modern art. Van Gogh’s early life was heavily influenced by the role of his father who was a pastor and chose to follow in his footsteps. Although he abandoned the desire to become a pastor, van Gogh remained a spiritual being and was strong in faith. Plagued with a troubled mind and poor health, van Gogh’s life became filled with torment and isolation that would influence his career in later life as an artist. In his late twenties, van Gogh had decided that it was God’s divine plan for him to become a painter. His works would express through thoughtful composition and vibrant color, the emotions that he was unable to manifest in the real world. Van Gogh’s perception of reality and his technique would face harsh criticism and never receive full acceptance from his peers as a serious artist during his brief career. In a collection of correspondence entitled The Letters of a Post-Impressionist, Vincent confirmed these thoughts while writing to his brother Theo, “It irritates me to hear people say that I have no "technique." It is just possible that there is no trace of it, because I hold myself aloof from all painters” (27). His technique would later be marveled and revered by the art world. Vincent van Gogh’s legacy would thrive as it challenged the way the world envisioned modern art through his unique brush strokes and profound use of color as seen in his works The Sower and The Night Café. ...ded after his death, it was Artaud that claimed, “No, Van Gogh is not crazy, he was pushed to suicidal despair by a society which rejected his works.” Whether or not Artaud’s theory is correct, Vincent Van Gogh was in fact very ill and his paintings are famous for how lucid they are in illustrating the way his mental illness affected him. Van Gogh’s post-impressionist style is very unique of the late 19th century in France and most of his work was done with impasto technique as a way of expression. It is recognizable that his illness had a larger impact on his paintings’ subject matters than the style they were painted in. Vincent Van Gogh’s fame mostly came after his death, and while his paintings did help him to express himself, they now live on to visually translate the true, unwritten stories of his life and the effects paintings have with a mental illness.
Art can mean many different things to many different people and was one of the earliest ways in which man has expressed him or herself to others, whether it was through cave drawings or hieroglyphics. It does not begin or end with just drawing or painting, items typically considered art, or the many other recognized facets of art including architecture, drama, literature, sculpting, and music. My research is based on Vincent van Gogh art, and two art paintings that I choose to study is The Starry Night, 1889, and the second art is The Sower 1888. Vincent van Gogh’s is known for Impressionism, that occurs to us in these times, much more to affirm close links with tradition, and to represent
The article Artists Mythologies and Media Genius, Madness and Art History (1980) by Griselda Pollock is a forty page essay where Pollock (1980), argues and explains her views on the crucial question, "how art history works" (Pollock, 1980, p.57). She emphasizes that there should be changes to the practice of art history and uses Van Gogh as a major example in her study. Her thesis is to prove that the meaning behind artworks should not be restricted only to the artist who creates it, but also to realize what kind of economical, financial, social situation the artist may have been in to influence the subject that is used. (Pollock, 1980, pg. 57) She explains her views through this thesis and further develops this idea by engaging in scholarly
Imagine you can own one of the famous painting in the world. Which one would it be? What will you do with it? If I got to own a famous painting, I would hang it in my bedroom and I’ll show it to my family. In this situation, If needed to narrow it down it will be The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali or Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. These paintings are extremely different, and their artistic movement is opposite from one another. By the end of this essay, you’re going to know the differences and similarities of these paintings.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.
The first difference between the two are the colors that were used. Van Gogh used bright blues and yellows to depict the night sky that stretches over the quaint town below. On the other hand, Kahlo used more neutral colors in hers. The sky in her painting is grey and stormy, giving the painting a melancholy feel, while van Gogh’s if full of swirling clouds and rather cheerful. The brush strokes in the paintings are vastly different as well. Van Gogh used thick, layered brushstrokes to give the painting an exaggerated, almost chaotic, feel. The painting technique that van Gogh used is called impasto, taking paint straight from the tube and onto the brush ("Van Gogh, The Starry Night"). This made his paintings more abstract while still keeping the subject obvious. You could always tell what he was painting, whether it was the night sky or his own face. On the other hand, Kahlo used a more realistic approach when painting, making her subjects clear and obvious. She studied biology and anatomy when she was in school, which was reflected in how well she could draw the human body and its parts like the hearts seen in The Two Fridas ("Kahlo, The Two Fridas (Las Dos
In history, there were two paintings that were very similar yet different. One was called the “Mona Lisa” which was painted by one of the most famous artists of the renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci. The other painting was called “Portrait of a Lady” by the flemish artist, Van der Weyden. They both were a huge influence in the art world during their lifetimes. And even after their deaths, their lives and works continue to inspire the minds and hearts of each generation.
Furthermore, in the discussion of comparing and contrasting the two pieces, it will include his influences, color palette, humanitarian attributes and emotional expressionism.
After his release in May of 1890, van Gogh fell into deep depression and eventually committed suicide in July of that year. In my opinion, van Gogh’s importance was shown through his different use of color that was looked down upon by the critics of the time but led to a new style of Post-Impressionism at the end of the Impressionist era. Also, his large amounts of paintings, over 2,100, portray a large amount of subjects which virtually anyone can relate to. Finally, his importance is verified in the sheer price of his paintings, the most expensive, Portrait of Dr. Gatchet, which was sold for 82 million dollars. Vincent was the first child born out of six, and the son of a Methodist preacher in Holland.
Entering into a discussion of Jackson Pollock is a difficult and large step to take, given the quantity of criticism surrounding his work. The contradictory nature of his work and his turbulent life makes attempts to understand his importance difficult. Art historians struggle to find the adjectives that will adequately project what Pollock accomplished at the height of his production, but it is the difficulty in separating the artist from the art that has often led to a idealistic view of Pollock as a tragic hero. His life was a constant struggle with his own existence and a search to find effective work in an intense and confusing world. Through the uncertainty yet force of his paintings, Pollock was able to embody motivation and determination
Vincent Van Gogh’s piece titled Starry Night, represents the artist’s insanity and isolation from the outside world. Van Gogh painted the view that was seen from the room, mixed with the emotions he felt inside. Starry Night is an oil painting on canvas and is two dimensional. The painting is found in the Museum of Modern Art located in New York. The variety of elements and principles of art, help to bring the painting to life, and help viewers understand what the art could represent.
