In the beginning of my first semester at Claflin University, I did not understand the reasoning behind the University 101 and 102 courses. However, as the time progressed, I learned to understand the significance of the courses. The University courses were created to guide students through their first year in college, but there are some positive and negative aspects of it. Although University 102 is uninteresting at times, I admire the fact that my instructors try to inform the students about internship opportunities and scholarships. Most professors do not seek out scholarship and other opportunities for their students, but my University 102 instructors stress the importance of applying for internships and scholarships. First of all, I feel as if the University 102 class should only be scheduled on Mondays because I do not understand the logic behind attending the class three times per a week. Secondly, I disagree with the mandatory community service due to the fact that it is unnecessary and my grade should not be determined by my good deeds. As a freshman in college, it is already difficult to adjust to the college lifestyle and the mandatory community service is overbearing. Community service should be optional because in the real word, nobody will force a person to give back to their community. Therefore, community service is ineffective if someone is forced to participate in order to receive a good grade in University 102. Overall, I could not have asked for a better University 102 class. In spite of all the misunderstanding and conflicts, my University 102 is the best because we are always supporting one another. My professors are demanding, but it is obvious that they want all of the students to succeed in college. Lastly, graduation is a big part of anyone’s life, and disallowing it can be devastating, especially for a very small problem. If a student works countless hours getting straight A’s every year, they should not be denied graduation because they didn’t work service hours at their local laundromat. At the beginning of this class, students were warned about coming into this class with a certain mindset. Students were warned not to have the preconception of thinking that COMS 201 would teach them how to manipulate others into doing what they wanted. Guilty of this mindset I attempted to trick myself into thinking that I did not have that mindset. Getting through the first few modules on theory was difficult. I remember asking myself, “What did I sign up for?”. For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Composition 1 taught me crucial writing skills and helped me grow as a writer. At the beginning of the semester, my papers utilized a considerable amount of passive voice, lacked transitional phrases, and the context was not always fully developed. But throughout the class, my writing became more clear, organized, and comprehensive. Passive voice allows the object of an action to be the subject of a sentence. In my first paper, the formal summary essay, I wrote, “The term describes situations, dating back to the 1980s, when excessive numbers of blacks were found to have been exposed to highly polluted areas.” The use of “were found” and “been exposed” distort the meaning of the sentence. As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. I was given the assignment was to reflect on certain subjects in the class English twelve that is through Madison Area Technical College but it was at taught at Deerfield high school. It was a class that taught me more than I thought it was going to teach me. It really has prepared me for college and got me sort of used to the college reading level and writing level. This paper will address some of the things I have learned throughout english twelve.
During this semester in middle school principal and practices we spent time doing workshops, which gave us a chance to teach our peers and learn from our peers. We learnt quite a bit during this semester, from Deb as well as from the textbook. We learnt how to teach tweens, what we can do to push the students, engage the student and how we as pre-service teacher and future teachers can improve in our classroom, yet there are still some unanswered questions to be answered as well as some questions that still need to be discussed. This semester the class has had countless opportunities to learn and question what we are learning and ask question that we still have.
University, to me, is a totally different concept from high school, where teachers, expert in their specific field, would introduce you to the beauty of it. Yet, after my two-and-half-year college life, I gradually come to realize that although professors at college are good at teaching, the most important thing I have learned is to learn by oneself.

It is not everyday when you can say the majority of your college class is you talking and the teacher listening, this is seminar. Coming from a family where heated debates were present almost daily, I already know if I were passionate about a topic I would never pass up an opportunity to express my opinions. For me, seminar has allowed me to grow in this confidence of expressing my thoughts as well as learning from others opinions. Having come from a high school that stressed the importance of student participation, I was not surprised by the amount I would actually have to speak in this class, however I was surprised by the importance of disagreements and the proper way to analyze text through underlining, highlighting and questioning and how it could aid my overall understanding of a text. Being a psychology major and extremely interested in social justice issues, seminar also opened my eyes up to the interesting perspectives of the strength of human nature.
Community service is beneficial in a number of ways. The first reason community service should be mandatory is because for years service learning has been closely correlated with scholastic achievement. The majority of students who engage in community service activities tend to perform slightly better in school than those who do not do any sort of service education. Community service gives students the possibility to take what they do outside the classroom and implement it with the learning they do inside the classroom. Doing service work is a prominent route for students to check what they’ve learned and even add new knowledge. Some would argue that community service is not correlate with scholastic achievement because it adds additional work and stress on a student. Advocates of no mandatory community service believes that an average student already juggle a huge work load.
