Why have we waited this long for women to start speaking up against discrimination? Discrimination against women makes a lasting impact on the women who experience it. Many of these women were too afraid to speak out against their perpetrators, until now. Women’s discrimination leads to unequal pay in the workplace we women out preform men, sexual harassment, and unfair appreciation for school teachers. Unequal pay in the workplace is very unfair, especially for women. For example, consider the case of the U.S. women’s soccer team as Bloomberg says, “Relative to their competition, the U.S. women’s team has dramatically out-preformed the men.” To clarify, even though the men’s team gets more money, the women’s team is even more successful than the men’s team. Another fact Bloomberg says, regarding world rankings, is, “In the past decade the women’s teams ranking hasn’t dipped below No. 2; the men haven’t been higher than No. 14 and are currently ranked 28.” Even though the women’s team has only been ranked 1st or 2nd, they still get paid less than the men’s team. Women have faced gender wage discrimination for decades. The gender pay gap is the difference between what a male and a female earns. It happens when a man and a woman standing next to each other doing the same job for the same number of hours get paid different salaries. On average, full-time working- women earn just “77 cents for every dollar a man earn.” When you compare a woman and a man doing the same job, “the pay gap narrows to 81 percent (81%)” (Rosin). Fifty-one years ago, in order to stop the gender gap discrimination, Congress enacted the Equal Pay Act of 1963. The act states that all women should receive “equal pay for equal work”. Unfortunately, even in 2014 the gender pay gap persists and even at the highest echelons of the corporate; therefore, the equal pay act is a failure.
Women are more than half the work force and are graduating at higher rates then men and continue to earn considerably less then men. There are several contributing factors to the gender wage gap. For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. Discrimination at work is a touchy issue. Most people, if not all, have experienced some sort or form of it and they ignored it, quit, or got fired from their job. Women tend to be more emotional than men and when women are judged and discriminated they are offended by it immediately. Also, the fact of women getting a lower income than men for the same job is almost unbelievable. It is very important to be concerned on the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
Equal Pay: I believe we should have equal pay for equal work. In the past there might have been some injustice, but now it is more honest. Equal pay is when you get paid for doing the same exact job, not working for the same company. If a business analyst is sitting at a desk for Ford, they aren’t going to be paid the same as an engineer who makes the frames of the cars.
Back in the early 1900’s, women couldn’t even have jobs. Today, women are running companies and performing that same exact job duties as men but still aren’t paid equally. All working women feel as they should stand up for sex discrimination dealing with their work place.
