We Should Demand Equal Pay for Women Many believe that wage discrimination is not real because there are acts against it, yet wage discrimination does still happen. On average, women are not paid the same for doing equal work as men (Filer, 2013). Studies show that 41% of women are the family’s main and only source of income, and women actually make up for 83% of the national gross product (Turk, 2015). If women are working just as hard and effectively as men, while raising children in many cases, why is this problem not fixed? Not only should women receive fair pay because they deserve it legally and morally, but also because it would be good for the U.S. economy, business world, and families. As we’ve seen already, women are often the most underrepresented professionals within businesses, therefore equal pay would bring out the opportunities of diversity within a company. It would end wage discrimination towards the LGBT community, which would bring in a cultural change and shape a broader area of ideas and conversations (Briskin, 2016). Women are needed to step in and add an opinion on certain stands about to be made by a business (Konrad & Pfeffer, 2010). A change is needed because men are the only party being represented since they dominate business world. Equal pay for women will allow them to feel more equal in the workplace and more open to giving ideas. A new sense of creativity and innovation could enlighten the works of the business. Women could also help initiate a stronger workforce by partnering up with men and working on evolving our insight and cross cultural intelligence to meet the unique needs of those who represent the changing workplace and marketplace. Equal pay will attract candidates and will retain them. If a business treats the employees with fairness, they are more likely to stay and recommend the company to outsiders. This leads businesses to booming records of applications and employees. Following the law and being fair to the employees will allow the business to grow (Kangasniemi & Kauhanen, 2013).
