Drinking alcohol is more than just a pleasurable activity around the world. It has much more meaning to everyone everywhere. Alcoholic consumption takes place at more events than parties. Social events take place in which there is alcohol consumed, but not in order to get drunk; it consumed as a social activity. To say that people who drink alcohol only have intentions of getting intoxicated is like saying people who work out only have intentions of getting sore. People of all ages consume alcohol, but the ages that should have the right to, are unable to legally. This causes consequences in which can be harmful to the people who consume alcohol illegally. In turn, this will lower the amount of illnesses and deaths among minors. Lowering that amount should be something we fight for, not eliminate from our minds. Every day, underage and binge drinking take place. Furthermore, teenagers become sick and even die every day by the cause of chronic drinking. “Habitual drinking increases the risk of cancer,” says Jurgen Rehm, PhD, chairman of the University of Toronto’s department of addiction policy. Cancer is among a list of many diseases caused by chronic drinking. David Freeman of WebMD wrote an article on the health risks of chronic/binge drinking. On this list - alongside cancer - is anemia, cardiovascular disease; cirrhosis, dementia; depression, seizures; gout, nerve damage; pancreatitis, and nerve damage. Such diseases are not caused by the occasional consumption of alcohol but by binge drinking. What makes this fact even scarier is that binge drinking is more common among teen-agers.
