Art, Tom, and Carol, three shift supervisors for Brako; each have their own style of managing their workers. Although each are liked by their worker, Carol is more effective then Art and Tom.
Art is effective at being hands-on and knowledgeable, but his workers find their work repetitive. Because of their simple and straightforward work workers tend to complain about being bored and that Art does not understand what they are going through. So even though Art is constantly involved with his workers, they are not enjoying their work.
Tom is also a supervisor liked by his workers. They explain that he is people-oriented and ensures that workers are acknowledged for their accomplishment. Although because second shift is responsible for setting up the machines and equipment, things become complicated and workers have a hard time adjusting to software problems that occur. Art motivates his workers through being involved in day-to-day operations. He reminds workers of correct procedures with direction and reminders. This tactic keeps workers on track with their tasks and although their work may be repetitive, the constant reminders keeps them motivated to stay focused on their goals. Tom on the other hand keeps his workers motivated by acknowledging workers accomplishments. Tom keeps all workers informed of events and accomplishments of others, which keeps workers motivated towards accomplishing things for the acknowledgement and praise. Lastly, Carol keeps her workers motivated in a totally different manner. Yes, she is constantly involved in their work habits spreading her knowledge, but it is the way she addresses problems the workers are having that keeps them motivated.
