Most of the strategies that are suggested to find your theoretical orientation seem very useful but I found that capturing yourself is the most useful in my opinion. Capturing yourself gives you a chance to give yourself feedback as well as receiving feedback from others. Only you know what theoretical orientation truly fits your values and beliefs. Recording yourself and watching it will give you the opportunity to point your own strengths and weaknesses and figure out different ways to go about improving. This will give you the opportunity to make sure the theoretical orientation that you choose is the right fit for you and if it is working and flowing with the way you like to work. I would want a counselor who asks questions but not too many. I would want them to be serious when it comes to my problems but at the same time I would want there to be a sense of humor to lighten up the mood during sessions. A counselor should be someone to help motivate and guide someone toward the right direction without them feeling judged. Identifying the type of counselor I would want helped my figure out the type of counselor I would want to be which led me closer to the theories and techniques that I can use in my practice. The exercise where I articulated my values helped me realize that I am very satisfied with myself and my surroundings. When being asked what I would want to change it took longer than expected to figure out an answer to that question. I realized that multiculturalism and diversity has a huge impact on what I would want changed. These two theories are more self-centered for the client and more client focused theories. Both of these theories focus on the client’s needs and what they want for themselves as the counselor is showing the client support and empathy. From this I realized that my theoretical orientation is meant to focus on individuals and uplifting them to help them help themselves. The theory that I found least appealing was the family theories school of thought. I do not believe that family and surroundings is what defines a person. I do not like to blame an individual’s problems on their family, an individual’s change should not be based on their family but it should be based on
