The second amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns. Gun control laws have been around just as long or longer than the second amendment. On June 26, 2008 District of Columbia et al. v. Heller US Supreme Court majority opinion, Justice Antonin Scalia, LLB, wrote, “Like most rights, the right secured by the second Amendment is not unlimited. From Blackstone through the 19th-centur cases, commentators and courts routinely explained that the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any many whatsoever and for whatever purpose…” With the support needed we can do what our nation has done for decades and ratify these changes to the second amendment. When thinking on whether or not we need to change our current gun laws I want everyone to remember that guns are not safe. Too many criminals purchase guns legally and use them to commit crimes. Background checks and mandatory waiting periods would prevent criminals committing these crimes. In the Sandy Hooks massacre the gunman used a semi-automatic weapon as one of his guns. Semi-automatic weapons are intended for military use and have no business in the hands of civilians for either self-protection or for playing a sport. I also know people worry about protecting themselves and this is why they choose to get a gun however there are many misguided individuals in our society. We as a society would be better off if they had less access to guns. We need to add more regulations in getting guns in the United States, and we need to do it as soon as possible so we do not have another Massacre. We as the citizens of America need to come together and put aside our differences and beliefs and do what is best for our
