Purpose of a Music conductor
In your early childhood have you ever needed direction for something you understood, but needed guidance on how to do it? This is the life of a musician under a conductor. Musicians look to the conductor, as a child looks up to his or her mother and father. Conductors specialize in educating, teaching, and instructing Musicians to become better players. Without a conductor a music ensemble could not be successful.
Becoming a music conductor is a very competitive task. A future conductor must have an early childhood musical experience. It might involve learning how to play music on an instrument. Then they must develop many types of skills involving a controlled behavior. They also have to job shadow a conductor that has a professional status. Next they must have a (“Masters degree in music theory, composition or conducting”). To be able to get inside at good music program is held with a strict audition (BLS). While in school they must develop purpose and operation of every musical instrument in the ensemble (Wisegeek).
He or she must understand each section in the music. Involving how to lead the ensemble in the direction of the music. The conductor also must know how to keep the ensemble maintained/ balanced throughout the performance or rehearsal. A great conductor is one that will push his students to greatness and will communicate with them to give them better confidence in their playing. He or she will have a strong appearance and is neat and has a workable schedule and enjoys going to many different places to hear other sounds than the one he conducts (Espie Estrella).

Conductors are seen as the leader of an orchestra or band and are given most if not all the credit for the music played. For such a simple task that consists of counting the beats, showing the mood for the music, and giving people cues to enter, conductors are as good as their orchestra or band, not by their talent. In this passage by Igor Stravinsky, Stravinsky discusses that the work the conductor puts in is negligible to the work the orchestra it self and that concerts should be about the complex qualities of the music played instead of how the conductor impacts the performance.
Early music is chamber music par excellence. Superstar conductors, dramatic symphonic music, and large-scale virtuosic genres such as the concerto, opera, oratorio, and ballet belong to a later period and a different aesthetic. Early music involves a decidedly intimate approach to music making: the performers are equal partners who understand the science of composition and do much more than merely interpret the music of others--they recompose it during rehearsals and performances. In this regard, early music may be considered performer oriented (similar to jazz or Indian classical music). The performer thinks of himself or herself as a "student" (a Liebhaber, i.e., "lover") of music, and must be able to play several different instruments as well as sing.
It’s a question we all ask ourselves from time to time: "Why am I doing this? Is it really worth it?" For band directors, the question comes up a little more FREQUENTLY. Music majors do have some respite from the demands of our discipline. For voice majors, there is choir. Choir provides an opportunity to learn in a more passive manner. The choir director leads the members of the choir toward the desired goal – the mastery of the piece of music to be performed. While choir members must be attentive and receptive, the burden is primarily carried by the director.
Any captain of a sports team must be committed and dedicated to their team. A captain must ensure that they are present and on time for every practice and game which he or she is intended to be at. Captains have many roles during practices, they are the first one there helping set up drills and organizing the practice. They need to make sure everyone is on the playing area on time and leading the warm-ups. The captain must lead by example by showing that he or she is there to practice or play his or her best and that everyone should give it their all, all the time (Mosher, 1981). They need to show that nothing else matters when that are playing or practicing; everyone’s mind should be strictly focused on the coach if he or she is talking, or the play they are working on, or the game they are in. The captain must be a strong leader and show dedication towards his or her sport.
From my viewpoint, I think the relationship between the conductor and the players is as an opportunist was using an individual to get access of something he needed. Throughout the entire concert, the players were ignoring the conductor. The only time the players make eyes contact with the conductor was at the beginning and when the other players needed to know when to join in. It is as they remember the conductor only when they need him. Although the role of the conductor was to guide the orchestra, the truth of the matter is that maybe the orchestra does not need a conductor. My favorite piece is Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G Major, K 313 because the ritornello completely brainwashed me. When I first stepped into the Samuel J. and Ethel Lefrak Concert Hall, I was impressed. Compared to my high school concert, the Lefrak Concert Hall was more professional and well designed. I think it has over 400 seats. Regarding the audience, there were different age groups of people attending the concert. I sat in the middle of the hall and I could hear the kids chitchatted in the back of the hall during the first concerto. Overall, I was amazed at how fast the flute soloist can play the notes and inhale normally at the same time. An effective leader is confident. I am not afraid to speak to large groups of people and give directions. If I do not understand a task, I will not be afraid to ask for clarification. Additionally, I am a very outgoing person. This will aid me to be an effective leader because I will not be afraid to talk to new people or go out of my way to help a fellow band member who is in need. Another quality which will make me an effective leader is that I am a great listener. I will listen to all directions the first time they are spoken and execute them to the best of my ability. Also, because I am a good listener I will be able to learn things quickly. I take all advice and critiques to heart so I can improve my skills with each time I practice. Because I am able to receive directions the first time I will also be able to help my peers to complete the task as well and will be able to answer other members’ questions. An effective leader is also able to teach others. I have had a lot of experience with teaching others so I know I will be able to teach other marchers how to improve on their skills and become the best marchers they can be. Also because I am very patient, I will be able to work with members who are having a harder time with a certain task without getting angry or frustrated with them. The amount of time consuming adolescents that cannot focus longer than a minute will be insurmountable. I feel proud to have grown up in a musical environment, as my grandfather was a professional musician who played in several professional symphony orchestras, my mother learned violin from my grandfather, then my older brother from her and then I did. On the other hand, my father is a former Fulbright Scholar with a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) degree from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Although they have all have been a tremendous inspiration, it was my own will, passion and love for music that led me to pursue such career.
