Australians have always been passionate about sport. Observers have often commented about the sporting ‘obsession’ of the Australian people. Sport shapes the Australian identity as we are a country widely known for sports this is done by hosting major sporting events, creating Australian born sports and participating in a diversity of different and unique sports all around the world. Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Badminton gives the opportunity for an individual to utilise their skills in performing specific shots to enable themselves to defeat their opponent. Firstly, by including badminton as a SECA sport, this would allow students to engage themselves in the sport more. Badminton would become a popular choice as it is gender friendly, unlike NRL which is only played by boys at SECA. NRL and badminton differ as they are both sports stereotypically designed for different genders. Females are seen suitable for sports requiring less physical activity and don’t involve much contact. However, NRL is seen more suitable for males as it is stereotypically stated that men are designed for contacted sports. This can be shown at Emmaus College there are no girl teams provided for girls to participate in NRL. Gender stereotypes are an influence from the cultural level of Figueroa’s Framework. However, in badminton females can join in and therefore the participation rate is increased with both genders. Badminton can be played competitively or non-competitively, therefore students who do not wish to partake in more physical sports can chose to play an easy, fun and relaxed sport. As Emmaus College consist of the appropriate equipment and space with courts suitable for badminton, Emmaus will be the ideal school to host badminton as a SECA sport. Local newspapers will come down to report on the new additions to the town and then can further educate people on the benefits of playing badminton. The media spreads the word and then alerts people to come and play badminton. The media can exploit that badminton is a friendly game for all ages and genders and can also become a competitive game for those who seek to utilise their skills. This can be accomplished with badminton as the sport allows a person to play both an attacking and defensive role and allows a person to use their body and their muscles to perform different shots. The role of the media is not only to attract the attention of the public but also the attention of sponsors which can further enable badminton to become more widely known. At current NRL is constantly aired on TV, whether it be state teams, or even small city teams the amount of airing that NRL receives plays a vital part in the participation rates for that sport.
