The majority of foods in the schools around the United States are junk food. The food a child consumes at a school is usually fattening and can lead to diseases mentioned before. Another problem with a child not eating properly is not receiving the vitamins and minerals he/ she desires. A change that was made to provide healthy lunches is to give the students one cup of fruits and a decent meal size. Schuna has done research as to why the lunches are a major health concern and she discusses ways to resolve and/ or prevent these health issues.
Schools need to focus on producing not only smart kids, but healthy ones as well. Kids rely on their schools to provide them with a nutritional meal, but often times are given unhealthy meals that lead to the obesity epidemic. Therefore, junk food should be banned in schools. There is no avoiding junk food advertisements because it shows up on social media, TVs, radios, vending machines, billboards, logos, etc. Companies spend on average $148 million a year on advertising in schools in commercials, equipment, vending machines, and rewards programs.
Students MUST take at least 1/2 cup of fruit OR vegetable for a meal. Fruits and vegetables are now considered two separate groups, with increased servings. Since Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act went into effect School districts have been struggled to executing the program, the backlash from students was almost immediate children began throwing away most of their lunch.”The School Nutrition Association said that 70 percent of school meal programs had taken a significant financial hit since the new mandates went into effect. Cafeteria operators from Los Angeles to New York report discouraging amounts of food waste and declining
With junk food so easily accessible it’s a big contributor to the rise in childhood obesity, what kind of nutritional example are they trying to set for kids. Children need to develop healthy eating patterns in and out of school, if public schools reduce the amount of junk food they provide it lowers the amount that the children can intake during school,
Our lunches are loaded with high amounts of calories, fat and carbs, and let’s not forget about grease! Healthy school lunch options at Saint James School are a serious issue. Saint James has to take action to help its students in a positive way and set them up to have a healthy life in the long run. Students eating healthier affects not only their health, but also affects their performance in the classroom. Healthy school lunch options will help parents also. What students eat in school will affect the way they eat as they get older.
Many kids in America suffer from type 2 diabetes and obesity. Schools do not inform children enough on what they should know about to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Schools should give information about having a healthy lifestyle by what they offer kids for breakfast and lunch, offering health classes to children at young ages, and limiting the amount of unneeded material students are exposed to at school. Schools should educate children about what they consume from what they offer children for breakfast and lunch. “With many schools districts facing budget shortfalls, a quick solution has come from offering more profitable fast food” (Barboza 17).
I want to investigate how schools and parents can work together to support healthy eating for young children. Many schools already have healthy eating initiatives in place, however, there is still a high percentage of children with obesity. I firmly believe that if schools and parents have a close partnership in promoting healthy eating young children will have consistency both in the school and home environment. Healthy eating is an area that I feel passionate about due to the effects poor nutrition can have on the child both in the short term and in the long term. During my second school placement, I witnessed a healthy eating initiative that was extremely successful both with the staff and the students.
For some of the student’s school meal might be their only source of proper nutritional meals. Eating unhealthy meals back to back at school will lead to negative effects health wise for children and is a major factor in the increase of obesity in our children. Unfortunately, not everything served in our school’s cafeteria is healthy. Even if the government does monitor and regulate the NSLP (National School Lunch Program) the schools still sale snack high in sodium, sugar, and trans fats. So, with this new school lunch helps put the appropriate requirements on the school lunches, by making healthier alternatives available for the student to choose from and the serving are “right sized’ ’of each food group.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has made a goal to “…reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015 by improving access to affordable healthy foods and increasing opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities across the nation” (“Fast Food Companies”) . Everyone needs to be aware and educated on the types of foods that are available. While it is true that fast food restaurants in school cafeterias is targeted toward teens, having healthier options would greatly benefit the community, for example, have a nutritional class while in school and planting gardens around campus. Making a nutritional class required to graduate high school would help the students become more aware of being healthy, and to help the students make better food choices that fuel the... ... middle of paper ... ..., Kristine Madsen, Gail, Lopez-Woodward, and Patricia Crawford. The government funding should provide help to public schools so they 're able to change the menu and also provide nutritional educators for public schools. A child that learns healthy eating and exercises would most likely to continue this healthy habits into adulthood. Improving the lunch menu in the cafeteria to service more appealing nutritious food on the menu. Children should have an option to pick vegetables over fries. If the school cafeteria changes certain things around by putting healthy food in front of junk food, maybe this will encourage children to pick up the health food instead of the junk food.
