Have you ever tasted school cafeteria food? I don’t think you would want to. In school story books, do you have characters saying that the food tasted good at school cafeterias? Nope. Why is this? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, advanced lunch system should be implemented.
First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food. If you observed students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two slices of bread), etc. Even the chicken nuggets aren’t very popular. And the prices! $3.75-$4.75 is not worth such “garbahge”, as a teacher would say. Out of the twenty five students I surveyed, 56% stated that they would like to see their cafeteria changed. Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. Obesity rates are higher than ever and will only continue to soar unless eating habits are changed. Regulations need to be enforced and fatty foods need to stop being sold. School districts need to stop worrying about how much money they're making, and start worrying about the health of the future generation. This food is killing them with every bite, and the effects can be seen on the inside and out. However, with effort from the government, the general population, and the students of America, this can be stopped. Eating habits can be changed and health can be restored. All it takes is one choice in the lunch room: the choice to refuse pink slime, gray burgers, and sodium chloride.

Many students really don’t like what their school lunches have to offer, most students hate the way the food tastes and it might be because public schools in particular have really poor choices and least variety of the food they serve, not only that but they are also excluding the fact that there’s student with different religions or lifestyle choices. The school's food isn’t filling and a great deal of the students think it’s disgusting. A majority of the schools give students a little scoop of the main choice and a little scoop of the side servings. Each student pays roughly $2.60 for one full serving (School Meal Trends & Stats). From talking with other students, they pay anywhere between a $1.25 and $1.50 for each extra serving. Basically, a student needs to spend about $5 on lunch, which is three servings, in order to be satisfied for the rest of the day. Paying $5 for three servings isn’t even the worst part. Most of the food being served, students don’t even enjoy eating. It’s either not cooked fully or they just don’t like it. Instead of forcing students to pay $5 for lunch they don’t even like, let them go spend it at a fast food place in town.
I was not shocked at the results but after seeing the numbers I became aware of the issue at hand. Of the one hundred five responses 42.9% eat lunch at school everyday, while 17.1 % never eat school lunch, and the rest eat it four, three, or two times a week. The data suggest that most people rely on school lunches to fill them up. Some of the reasons that 17.1 % do not eat school lunch can be due to distaste of school lunch, or the less quantity. Of the 42.9% of people that get school lunch 34 said it tastes bad and 10 said it taste very bad.
According to a recent study, although 30.6 million students across the United States eat school lunches, only 6% of schools meet the requirements to be considered healthy by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. School lunches in America tend to contain little to no nutritional value. Because of this, making changes to the school lunch menu is crucial to the health of students all throughout the nation. Eliminating some favorite meals and changing to a healthier school lunch menu is a great idea because students eat more fruits and vegetables if they are provided to them, the meat served causes a great deal of problems that most students are unaware of, and a countless amount of families cannot afford to send their children to school with healthier options everyday. First and foremost, creating more options of fruits and vegetables to students will result in those said students eating more fruits and vegetables.
