This makes sense as he tends to create a pattern for himself within the play. Juliet was not the only maiden that he claimed to be lovestruck by; Rosaline is his love interest for the majority of Act 1 and he is quite vocal about it. The character who is never seen, Rosaline, is the girl whom Romeo was absolutely enchanted by, so much so that he was rendered sick with love upon finding out that she was to remain chaste. Rosaline disturbed the thoughts of the young lover constantly until the instant that he saw Juliet. Once he laid his eyes on Juliet, Rosaline is immediately forgotten. Why is is that Romeo does this? Moving from girl to girl, creating some sort of artificial passion before he even knows the person. This forces the idea that there has to promptly be something in it for him that he can see just by looking at her. It is hard to pinpoint, but a valid reason for his shift in focus is due to the fact the Rosaline aloof and chaste, whereas Juliet is exciting and unapologetic in her desires. This is where sex is also a logical point to be brought into question as many would think that that is the main thing he would be considering. Romeo knows that a beautiful girl by his side would raise his social standings even higher, allowing him to do whatever it is that he wants
Unfortunately, this reductionist view of the play makes it much less viable for older audiences who have usually developed a more complex understanding of love than the one presented in these films. Love is, after all, usually not so idealistic or reckless. Understanding Romeo and Juliet as a love story is reasonabl...
In the play. Romeo is just getting over Rosaline "rejecting" him (Act I, Scene 1, Line 155). This means that he could have just been very upset. Resulting in him just grabbing the first thing he could find which just happened to be Juliet. If he had never even met Rosaline. He probably would have never met Juliet either. Although in the movie version of this part, all that the viewer knows is that
William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two teenagers from feuding families who fall in love at first sight. Through the course of the play, Shakespeare uses the characters Romeo, Friar Lawrence, and Benvolio to reveal that physical attraction is often misinterpreted as love.
Love is often perceived as something perfect and flawless in today’s society. However, Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, portrays love as a form of passionate and violent force that comes with both rewards and consequences. The tragedy focuses on two young lovers called Romeo and Juliet, whose families are intertwined in an ancient feud that disrupts the peace in Verona, Italy. For love, the two teenagers are driven to overcome obstacles they will never imagine doing, and as a result, they along other family members are forced to pay the price of their lives. Through the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare exhibits the reality of young love through the portrayal of the Queen Mab Speech, the impulsive actions taken by both lovers, and the results caused by the powerful nature of their love.
One of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies, Romeo and Juliet, is a story about two teenagers of rival houses that fell in love at first sight, but did they really? It seems quite odd that two literary characters as well-known as these, were amorous with one another after a brief meeting at a ball. Teenagers, since the Elizabethan era have been called impulsive, their decisions often sudden and have an unhappy ending. They have also been accused of being lustful and over-dramatic, due to their intense, temporary feelings. These beliefs apply to the two “star-crossed lovers” as well as the decisions they made, both of which caused pain and regret for both themselves and others as well, even if it wasn’t intended.
No matter where in the world you are, stories and tales of life and love stimulate different emotions from the bottom of someone’s heart. Various situations of love cause people to feel happiness, sorrow, and even pity. Some stories are realistic, but others are too exaggerated to be real. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is well known by children and adults alike. Although this story is fictional, the tragic love of the two main characters is looked upon many. Though being well known, there is much strife and dispute. One of those arguable views is whether or not the play is an Aristotelian tragedy, or just tragic itself. But Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is indeed an Aristotelian tragedy by the accuracy of the imitation of reality, flaw of the tragic heroes, and the importance of the inferior characters.
“ ...Young men’s love then lies/ Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.”, claims Friar Lawrence in the play Romeo and Juliet when he gets the insight of their love (2.3.67-68). Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare which portray a fateful love story of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet in opposing families in Verona, Italy. Loving and being loved adds a sense of purpose to our lives. Humans accept love from anyone and anything they can receive it from, it’s just human nature. In the literary work of “The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, the reader is introduced to two characters, Romeo and Juliet, who believe they share feelings of “true love” towards each other. However, such deep affection that both characters have for each other is not something that can be developed in a short amount of time, for that would not be love, it would be lust. Romeo and Juliet were two impulsive teenagers who did not understand the concept of “true love”.
To reemphasize, the theme of love is represented through Romeo’s actions, the whole play, and modern art/music. Yet, the immense power of love can cause bad choices and loss of common sense, which could lead to dire consequences. Love can make two people happy, but it can also cause pain. It is hard to understand but one thing is for sure, in a literary world where love falls between two star-crossed lovers, the outcome is never a happy ending.
A classic work of art, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare strongly guides readers to the concept and memories of love at first sight. With clever dialogue, competition and rivalry, humorous teases, and insight to brave and passionate romance, Shakespeare demonstrates a powerful connection and battle between emotions and justice. Love has been expressed since the beginning of time; since Adam and Eve. Each culture expresses its love in its own special way. Though out history, though, it’s aspect has always been the same. Love has been a major characteristic of literature also. One of the most famous works in literary history is, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Prior to the 19th century, love and marriage were often considered to be separate concepts. Marriage was strictly business management whereas love was a pursuit outside of marriage. During the renaissance, “ideal” love was a purifying and noble experience. There were two outcomes necessary for the love to be deemed ideal: there could only be a union of the hearts, minds and soul, not the bodies; and the unrequited desire had to lead to ennobling of the lover. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare can be read as a satire of courtly love as opposed to a tragic love story celebrating it. This is because Shakespeare mocks “ideal” beauty conventions, suggest that courtly love is not actually love, and uses irony to exaggerate its effects.
