The iconic image I chose is a simple letter “U” that is found on thousands of cars in America; instantly when someone sees the letter “U” on vehicle they know it is Uber. Uber has shaped American’s lives, in the palm of your hand. One can request to be picked up from almost anywhere they are located within minutes and taken to a destination of choice. Uber has transformed America's service ride industry and created a new and revolutionary demand for society's needs. Uber has shaped the culture of America by negatively diminishing the American Dream, creating more congestion in city traffic, and changing work for Americans. Several people come into America with the dream of one day becoming successful and being able to be free and live a life …show more content…
It is a part of the American culture, angry people on their way to work all in a hurry in rage that someone cut them off. While traffic is a well known irritating aspect of everyday transportation, Uber claims that they have not added more traffic. They claim that their data proves they do not add to the congestion in cities but, “transportation analyst Charles Komanoff has crunched Uber’s own numbers and estimates that the service has actually reduced traffic speeds in the central business district by about 8 percent”(3). Eight percent, that does not seem like a lot but remember this is still a new business and it is only growing larger everyday. Uber is adding to the everyday problem people deal with on their way to work. Making traffic even slower than it already is does not benefit the world. Uber’s data released hourly reports on the number of rides and drivers below 59th street and the rest of the city of Manhattan between dates of May 31 and July 19. It stated the number of Uber vehicles in the central business area which make up half of the company's ride pick ups. For example, “Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., there were an average of 1,904 Uber cars on the road below 59th Street. That seems like a small number at first glance, and Uber highlights that fact by proclaiming it ‘is not the source of Manhattan congestion.’ But the …show more content…
Work is a big aspect of american culture. Being a part of the American culture I can say that having a job or going to work is a part a lot of people's lives. One of the questions when you first meet someone new is, Where do you work? New start up companies like, “Uber and Handy enable consumer access to everything from a chauffeur to a home cleaning service—services once mainly for the well-off—with just a tap on your smartphone or the click of a mouse” (4). Uber has made their company easily accessible and makes it easy for consumers needs and wants to be met. In the span of a few seconds you can request an uber witht the tap of your, how efficient is that? Your ride picks you up and drops you off at your location of desire, meeting the needs of the consumer. These new startup companies are innovative and new, but how are they affecting American’s jobs? Rita McGrath, a professor of management at the Columbia Business School said, "If you look at the way all of our human capital systems are designed. Education, health insurance to retirement insurance, either you are employed or you are not. And there's this grey area in between which is what a lot of people are finding themselves in" (4). While New start up companies like uber are providing on demand services they are not only meeting needs of the consumers but they are also providing new jobs for people that are in need of work and are found in that “grey area”. While Uber
Taxi companies would like to close the App-On Gap because Uber would no longer have a competitive advantage over taxi companies who already have to carry commercial liability insurance. American Insurance Association, Uber customers the California App-Based Drivers Association and the attorneys for consumers would benefit from closing the App-On Gap because there would be a much lower risk of a company not paying for insurance than there is of a single individual not paying their insurance
Jonathan Kay’s “Fare Share” has many weaknesses that make his argument not effective when writing his article. Kay’s argument talks about how Uber is stealing taxi drivers of their livelihoods and how Uber is taking over the taxi monopoly. Weaknesses found in this article was when Jonathan Kay makes Uber look bad when talking about their flashy app which seems to kind of promote it even more, and with a little more research he can find other taxi apps. To add on he seems to write it very tongue-in-cheek. Furthermore, Kay also lacks evidence to support what he says because some of his arguments are weak and basic. Another weakness would be that he left the reader wondering what he is trying to prove in his argument about Uber, he seems to be all over the place with his argument. Overall, this was a weakly written article.
In the beginning America was new and undiscovered. There were resources just waiting to be taken hold of in order to attain great riches and with this came the birth of the American Dream. The American Dream is the idea that with unfaltering determination one can acquire a prosperous life. Jay Gatsby only wanted to gain money so he could have his dream life with Daisy who needed someone who could take care of her. At the time “he had no comfortable family standing behind him”(Fit. 156). Throughout history people have fled from poverty to America in order to find a better way of life where they can accomplish the ultimate goal of wealth. For example, the Irish immigrants went to America to escape starvation and a worthless existence, in hope for a brand new start at a good life. Since the start, America has been a land where anything can happen and anyone can be rich with a little hard work. America is a place where the old caste system is abandoned and freedom to do anything and be anyone is taken to a new extreme.
Lately in the media there has been much debate about the overtaking of the Taxi industry by Uber and whether or not it should be legal in today’s society. In ‘Why I hail Uber and damn taxis’ Published in The Sydney Morning Herald Online, May 30th 2015. Wendy Squires contends that Taxi services’ time has come to be replaced by Uber. Similarly the reader comment by Andrew published on The Age Online, contends that Uber is much safer and more convenient than the old taxi service that society used to rely so heavily upon.
The American dream is an illusion of any person aspiring to be a part of a nation that calls itself “the home of the free”. Often imagery of America communicates ideas of freedom, equality, and success in life, from these we associate the American Dream. Immigrants are trying to escape from other nations where there are people dying in the streets and families that cannot make enough money to put food on the table. These people see America as the land of prosperity and opportunity; many come to this country for refuge. This view is shared throughout American history, when the Native Americans first arrived, to the settlers forming their colonies, to the Industrial Revolution, to the gold rush, and to this very day. Many people die to reach this land full of promise for a better life. However, the land of opportunity is not open for anyone, which is contradictory due to the nature of freedom and history of immigration in the United States of America.
Millions of immigrant moved to America in search of freedom, equality, and success. This is known as the “American Dream”. A famous author names James Truslow Adams stated, “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” (The Epic of America p.214-15). In other words, he believes that the American dream gives everyone the opportunity to reach an ideal place where you can be happy and successful; you can get there from your ability and achievement as stated above. The American dream made immigrants believe that they have a chance of receive equal opportunity, but when they got here they realize that it was a myth. Whiling living in American they realize that they were limited on education, voting rights, and jobs opportunity.
The American dream is a goal many hope to live. This desire dream of many individuals includes a hardship, and dedication. The United States represents freedom to many immigrants who fought for a better way of life. America has been a nation of immigrants, starting with its original inhabitants, who left their homelands for a chance to start a new life. According to an article by Gilder Lehrman Institute, over the past 400 years immigrants have escaped to America for many reasons. In the article some reasons for their escapes from their homes was due to war; others for the freedom to practice the religion of their choice. Freedom is the key in America, and the pursuit of happiness, which many fought to be part of. Many immigrants take long journeys for the economic opportunities. Even after thousands of years of immigration history America is still the land of the free, and the country where many can accomplish their American Dream.
Many travelers had to flee their home countries in order to have a new start in life. The only way they could accomplish that is by following what the American Dream had provided them. The American dream states that all people can work hard and life a happy and successful life. America has and will provide access the American Dream.
Throughout history, people from cultures around the world have come to America seeking a new life or a change from their current conditions. They may have come to avoid persecution, to avoid overpopulation, or to attempt to be successful in an entirely new world from the life they formerly knew. As the immigrants arrived, some found that their dreams had been attained. Conversely, some found that the New World was not as fantastic as they were led to believe.
There are a lot of positive reports about the benefits working for Uber has compared to working for a taxi company. Cab drivers have to pay exponential rates to lease cabs; Uber drivers have the freedom to drive cars they own. Many former cab drivers have switched to Uber due to the personal financial benefits (“Uber isn’t Just Good For…”). There have been some reports of inappropriate
Uber needs to focus its entry into densely populated areas of Canada lacking a well developed public transit system. These opportunities can easily be taken advantage of if Uber was to further develop its existing strengths.
A lot of people around the world immigrate to the United States to find their own American Dream, Freedom, Wisdom. The American dream gives immigrants the opportunity of a lifetime. They get to push their own limits. Achieve their personal goals in life that they want to achieve. The American Dream term means, “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” (Declaration of Independence1).
Many years ago, people have immigrated to a new world where they can hope for a more beautiful existence, for the wealth, for the freedoms, for the better opportunities and most importantly, for the American Dreams.
